Just Looking

Hello. I'm not a Lotus owner, but I couldn't help but notice how affordable they are for a classic car. I've never seen one in person, but they are all over Ebay. I like the look of the earliest Esprits, but from what I've read on this forum so far, they seem like too much trouble. I am shopping for a DeLorean DMC12 to replace my 1969 Cadillac. It was red for 6 years, but I returned it to white for resale reasons.

Hi Lucy welcome to the forum. :P

The early cars arent really any trouble, we are just a bunch of drama queens that like to exaggerate.

Find yourself a nice S3 Turbo Esprit (in white if poss) :P

Dont bother with the Delorean, Lotus only got involved in that for the money :D

Thanks Wayne. If I buy an Esprit, it would be an S1 in red. Red for the DeLorean too with some paint. All my cars have to be red. My folks are Mormon, so I need a funky red car to stand apart.

Hi

And welcome to the forum, but would you seriously paint a DeLorean red ?

I know the stainless steel body work can be a pig to keep clean but painting it.....

Noooooooooooooooooooooo ! :D

As for the S1 that's the one not to have if you don't want too much trouble, unless you can find one thats perfect and had all the design problems put right like the cooling system. Go for something at least like an S2 / 3 and save youself a lot of headaches.

Welcome to the forum!

I very much appreciate your idea to buy a DeLorean - stunning looking car! Always wanted one ( but you cannot have it all! ). But are you sure they are less troublesome than the Esprits?? Spare parts are not that easy to get. And just in case you go for one - sorry - but if you paint it you will indeed be shot by your colleagues  !

Here they are, beamed down from the Enterprise ( oups! -wrong movie )

Welcome Lucy

I say take the best advice and buy what you really want.

None of us here would put up with the Esprits little quirks

if we didn't really want one, and a really sorted S1 will turn

more heads than a new V8 at one of our meets.

As for the DMC, aside from how the doors open,

and it being made of the same stuff as my sink,

i have never seen anything amazing about it as a

sportscar. However, as an icon of the '80's, and a

filmstar i can see why people get drawn to it for

what it is.

Thanks boys. I'm not sure what car I want, but I know it will be a daily driver, with mom's minivan as a backup car. My Cadillac was not much trouble and I could take it to any mechanic for service. The idea of servicing a DMC or Esprit scares me, from what I've read on the forums. Have spent a lot of time this week on Ebay car shopping. The Cadillac is too fuel hungry for modern times. I'll decide on a car before September. The color has already been decided. RED.

You obviously like Giugiaros styling as the S1 and the DMC12 were his (great) work. Its pretty difficult to get paint to stick on stainless steel so pick your painter carefully.

welcome lucy. sorry about the mormon thing. don't get an S1, that is no car for a young lady. with those, you need to watch your gauges and listen for odd noises constantly. i hate to generalise, but women tend to lack the will to do so. the delorean was built to last past 100K miles. collect whatever spare parts when they become available too. when it was released, i considered buying one; but then the whole back to the future connotation turned me off. still a beautiful car. grace slick of jefferson starship drove one.

Blimey! Do you like being alive Teigan? :D

I think we have two? Esprit owning ladies on here,

and while i don't know if Renu does work on her car,

Kylie sure as hell does, bigtime!

Ladies who drive Esprits are, after all, a whole world

apart from Ladies that drive ordinary cars...

Welcome to the forum, Lucille. That's quite a change you are considering from enormous Cadillac to nimble Esprit. If you are undecided, I would suggest you watch this forum and try to drive some examples. Are you near where any of the clubs meet? If so go along and talk to the owners and use their experience.

I'm looking for a 98 or later because of the restyled dash; not because I couldn't work on it.

pshhhhh...

BTW, I drive a 99 Chevy S-10 4.3L truck, and I do all of the work on him myself.

Off topic:

Does anyone remember the Volkswagen commercial where a Roger Moore lookalike destroyed an Delorean, which was an Esprit lookalike, and then called a beetle with his wrist-watch ?

Teigan, you needed some help, chap. I am your backup

Maybe another to consider, of similar ilk, is the Renault Alpine 610 and GTA. The three, Esprit, Deloren and that Alpine are almost inbred. Both the Deloren (lots of Lotus input) and Alpine use the same engine/box configuration. The last of the turbo Alpines are gaining increasing esteem because they are so capable and fast. Not sure how many ended up in the states though. An added benefit is it can carry four as long as they travel without luggage.
