Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted September 5, 2021 Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted September 5, 2021 @Bling Spyros delivered his new acquisition today. I reckon he's snagged a bargain! Definitely worth the wait. I'll be getting under it tomorrow to find out what it's really like... 6 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. Gold FFM Bling Posted September 5, 2021 Gold FFM Report Share Posted September 5, 2021 Thanks for taking it on @Sparky . The car behaved itself over the last couple of days and in particular in heavy traffic during today’s hot weather. Good start. Interested to see what @Sparky finds, or does not, during the service and post purchase check over 😊 Quote Long time Lotus admirer, recent owner
Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted September 6, 2021 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted September 6, 2021 Found a few things! Went through a lot of the C service checklist today. Cambelt etc. is off. The car is generally in very nice condition. But I found a few interesting things... N/S door check strap is missing. Not particularly unusual for these to break, except somebody has gone to the trouble of removing it entirely and patching the slot on the door! Naturally the door opens too wide and care must be taken not to damage the paint. Interesting solution! A cable tie isn't good enough though, so I'll wirelock this. Clutch master, hmmmm. Can't find evidence of a leak... Replaced the brake fluid. Front nipples opened OK, but NSR waxs blocked and needed a bit of fettling with a fine drill, and OSR won't budge at all, so I bled through the caliper pipe, which will do for now. I've doused it in a nasty penetrant; let's see... NSF wheel has slight play. I've traced it to the upper balljoint, which does have a split rubber (under all that paint), so that'll be replaced. A few coolant leaks found! Two at the front of the engine, which will hopefully just need a good cleanup and decent clips. But the one at the front of the car may be problematic. I believe the curved chassis pipe may have gone a bit nasty. I'll find out later... One more item is the fuel pump, which is a little noisy and inconsistent, so I'll be changing that just in case. Hopefully that's the lot! I'll be revisiting this on Tuesday, as I have another TE booked in tomorrow. 3 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. Gold FFM Sparky Posted September 8, 2021 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted September 8, 2021 Valve clearances this morning. In: 6, 6, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 5 Ex: 10, 10, 10, 8, 11, 11, 11, 13 The exhaust 13 I could just about live with, but not so much the 4 and definitely not the exhaust 8. Spyros wants it right, so towers coming off! And I was so looking forward to the cambelt this morning... 2 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted September 8, 2021 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted September 8, 2021 Blistering delivery, as usual, from PNM, so new fuel pump and filter fitted. Also filled transmission. Rest of the time was tower removal and strip/inspect/clean (no issues found), and shim measurement. With towers removed, I have much better access to sort out some messy coolant unions at the front of the engine. The car is getting an enormous amount of interest from passing park traffic! elsewhere tomorrow, so hoping to resume Friday as long as shims are in hand... 3 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. Gold FFM thebartman Posted September 14, 2021 Gold FFM Report Share Posted September 14, 2021 Also, from the pictures - N/S heatshield for rear tyre (between turbo and tyre) appears missing? - perhaps removed for inspection?

Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted September 17, 2021 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted September 17, 2021 Shims didn't arrive in time before other scheduled work, so I finally got back on the car yesterday and today. Valve clearances done and towers now back on. In: 5,5,5,5.6.6.6.5; Ex: 10,10,10,10,11,11,10,10. Belts on and car is now running well after ignition timing adjustment and tweaking the carbs. For the second time this year, I lost a distributor out of its key. I take some responsibility for these events, but this one was really stuck in there, and when it finally moved, it popped out! Removed the plenum to facilitate distributor refit. Removed all the shitty silicon from the plenum faces (WHY????). Managed to get the dizzy in very quickly, which was nice. C service and comprehensive check now complete, but I'm still plagued with niggling coolant leaks in several places... Towers back on, yaaaay! I do love to see a nice red bead. Made up a new earth lead for the tensioner, all ready to fit here. Best I say nothing about this. With a fair wind, I'm hoping to finish this one tomorrow if I can secure the leaks. 4 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. Gold FFM Sparky Posted September 18, 2021 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted September 18, 2021 Oh dear. It was all going so well... Everything finished apart from those pesky coolant leaks. Only one thing wrong in this picture: the blue hose which, aesthetically, has to go. I have to change the header to expansion hose anyway, so might as well do this one. Among the many things that grind my gears (hehe) is the use of bolts at the tower rear covers. Without care, this can create massive cam end float. I dump the bolts and install M6 stud, which I think is far more secure and much less hassle. A short test drive was made to check all is good, and to stress-test the coolant system. Bugger. The leaks at the front of the engine have not been cured, and it's now clear that one hose is delaminated and the other is a cheap shot at modification that just doesn't fit properly, so they will be ordered. But even worse is the front leak. It's on the RH curved pipe, so I removed everything forward of that. The end of the metal pipe is currently intact but caked in deposits and starting to corrode a fair bit. Worse is the reducer hose connected to that, and far, far worse is the curved pipe holding the otter switch. Here's the curved chassis pipe pre- and post-cleanup. Currently intact after a good going over but you can see the rot starting to set in. I'd be much happier with a longer reducing hose for this; let's see what can be sourced. Regardless, the hose in question needs to be replaced. Now, to the naughty bit. This lot looks pretty rough. And I thought the curved pipe needed closer examination. Ooooh, looks like filler: Clearly repaired. Cleaned the bulk of it off with scrapers and wire brush to assess the extent, and the damage is too much. In fact you can just see the filler protruding inside the pipe. So, it's not over yet! Hoses and pipes will be ordered on Monday, and hopefully Spyros will have his car back next weekend... 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. exeterjeep
Bibs posted this the other day and the picture has gone in the same way as the esprit pics. Hosting all of our images on Amazon S3 suddenly started getting pricey as per below so I'm moving them back to the TLF server at the moment. There may be some disruption as there are a lot! There's no reason for the increase in cost other than Amazon upping their prices. I guess they do have a space ship program to pay for!! https:https://www.thelotusforums.com/forums/uploads/monthly_2021_09/screenshot-console_aws.amazon.com-2021_09.17-11_16_59.png.a37bbb3bcc9895d22d532831652df561.png
