GavinT
Taking the bellhousing off the gearbox to do the circlip upgrade. Checking things over I’m presented with is. Not too far away from totally failure. I have no idea what could have caused this type of wear but somebody has been in there before and the bearings are not original. The spacer rings and collar were inserted out of order when I removed the output shaft housing. 1
drdoom
Lucky save there, Gavin! The guy we need to hear from on this is Harry Martens, a well known specialist. Are you with us @dsvitesse1?
910Esprit
Maybe a fake SKF, or maybe fitted with insufficient preload? Has the debris done any damage to the diff?
GavinT
Visually I can’t see any damage. This box is an unknown to me and was purchased as a spare. Not witnessed it in action. Told it work fine but you know how that goes.
Popular Post dsvitesse1
Hi, imho failure while mounting on differential. Most likely not in line and with hammer. cheers, Harry 2 1 Quote with kind regarDS, Harry Martens www.ds-vitesse.com
snowrx
Orientation of fracture face looks like rollers impacted the race from behind? With the taper of the race I don't know how that could happen unless somehow a puller could catch them from behind.

Looks more likely someone whacked the bearing on with a punch and hammer on the centre race which cracked the side of it, then instead of buying another one they left it.
drdoom
I'm with Andy on this, best guess being that some plodder whacked on the inner race with a punch of modest size, thus the nicely scalloped voids.
GavinT
This transaxle also has pretty badly worn primary shaft splines and really needs a rebuild. Not something I’ve budgeted for. Good job it’s a spare.
