Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted March 27 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted March 27 At this point I must relate an anecdote from last week. I was on my drive, doing the usual, when a couple walked out of the park and approached me, and asked if I was Sparky. They're from the UK originally but now live in the States, visiting family here (IIRC) and had taken the train for a walk around the park. I asked him how he knew, and he said he thought he recognised the GT3 but anyway, some bloke working on a second Esprit on his drive had to be me. @tjs98jetta on here. We had a lovely chat. Weird world. Cheers Trevor - see you on Long Island one day! 3 1 2 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden. eclat22
I have to admire Sparky carrying out all this on the drive, I have to admit my commitment to working on my car's is not what it used to be even in my garage.
Gold FFM Bling Posted March 27 Gold FFM Report Share Posted March 27 I guess the Esprits keep him away from the temptations of the Bookie and the Boozer but also maintains a steady supply of Gin 😁 1 Quote Long time Lotus admirer, recent owner
Gold FFM Mysterae Posted March 27 Gold FFM Report Share Posted March 27 Awesome stuff. I enjoyed working on my Esprit on the drive in the day. The amount of conversations I had with neighbours and passer-by's was numerous, although a neighbour did comment that he saw me under the car more than in it. 2 Quote Signature not working... Think I'll up my game to single malts... Contrary to popular belief I have almost zero interest in motorsport, and certainly couldn't care less about modern performance vehicles. I just love Lotus (and the niche marques) and I love fixing stuff, so the combination of the two means I can keep some wonderful classics on the road - smashing. And, similar to Alan's comment above, I love working out in the open on my drive and the passers-by are a constant source of entertainment! Getting a bit old now, though, so my low temp tolerance level is diminishing. 4 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. eclat22
Not so fussed about the cold but do like the ability to shut the roller door down and leave the tools out. Most of the cars I work on are 25yrs old or more, currently recommissioning a Vauxhall Nova 1.2 GL that has been in hibernation for 20 years, surprised at the number of people who have commented on passing when I have the door open that they learnt to drive in one.
Gold FFM Escape Posted March 27 Gold FFM Report Share Posted March 27 Glad you enjoy working on your drive! I've always hated it, especially roadside. I don't care for passers by and assume most of their comments will be irrelevant if not annoying. So I'm very happy to be able to do my thing inside the Workshop where I can only be 'bothered' by those I chose to let in. 😉 Quote I have made many mistakes in my life. snowrx
Don't miss the days of lying on the ice with a transmission on my chest, worming my way out from under a truck. Gold FFM Sparky Posted March 28 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted March 28 When I was young and daft, I used to drop a gearbox (normally Ford) onto my chest and leave it there whilst changing the clutch, then lift it back in. Popular Post LOTUSMAN33
I love the March to October period and would rather be outside under natural light. I work on all classics and always have something I tinker about with for myself or friends hence the quip Kerbside Motors as my neighbours always call it. Ive had my orange trolley Jack since I was an apprentice engine fitter and it’s still going strong albeit closer to the ground now where the steel wheels have done more miles up and down my driveway than some old cars! I do work on modern cars but only when needed or for a favour to keep the locals happy. Defiantly get into single malts Sparky as nothing else compares and it’s a good payment for those favours 😉 Long live old skool mechanics, I’d love a village garage one day looking after the locals cars, tractors, bikes and anything old! 🙂 4 Quote Do or do not, there is no try! I have never, ever worked on my car and happy to say I haven't even had to lift a finger to replace a battery. I don't work 6 days a week and 2 jobs so that I can then get my hands dirty! I work so I can pay a professional. Oh and yeah, Also, I don't clean it myself. I pay someone to come round and clean it. Happy to say its still wrapped up nice and warm. I even paid someone to grease the hubs and remove the wheels before storing it. I would hate to have to clean something when I decide its warm enough to drive. Oh yeah. I also paid them to check my tyre pressures cause........... Meh. Quote Possibly save your life. Check out this website.http://everyman-campaign.org/ Distributor for 'Every Male' grooming products.
