I just want to say hello. I purchased my 86 lotus esprit brand new from swift auto world north, they stop selling them about 10 years ago. Hopefully this will be a nice place to talk about lotus cars. My car is finally starting to have problems so I guess I'll need to learn how to work on them also .

OK, I'll try and put pics in the garage section now, might take me a while not really used to doing forums stuff.

My guess is the car has around 50,000 to 60,000 miles, don't really know because the ODO went out at 36k, and I never bothered to have it fixed, but the speedo still works.

I was much more excited about the car 18 years ago, but its a nice toy, mostly just sits in the garage .

Jussi, I noticed all the work you did on your car, congrats ;). Can you tell me how to adjust the timing? I just loosen the screw holding the distrubuter in place and use a screwdriver on the other screw to adjust it right??

OK, pics posted, thanks for the reply's, nice ot meet you all.

OH, and can someone tell me whats a G-car and S-car

Nice car you have B) Must be great feeling to be the only owner.

You must get new screw for the distributor before any damages will happen. Mine was also loose and it actually dropped but I was lucky the the car was then at garage

G-car - Giugiaro designed beast. Loved by many but not as nice as the...

S-car - Stevens designed behemouth of a mota, best shaped Esprit, esp the first ones from '88 to '94 ;) *

*may be subject to some debate

Thanks for the warm welcome, Teigan, Jussi, Bibs, I want to get another Esprit, the new one with a V8, but my wife didn't like the idea. I'm still thinking about it though , but I doubt there will be any new ones left soon.

Actually I did own a S-car, I bought a 1988 brand new from swift also, it was pearl white. My brother saw the car and fell in love with it and begged me to sell it to him, he still has it and drives it regularly, that one has over 100K miles on it now. Should have kept it, oh well.

According to Lotus Esprit Service notes right ignition timing for export prior -87 Esprit is:

Below 1000rpm. nil

2000rpm. 8'

3000rpm. 16'

Static Ign. timing 12' BTDC. Idle speed Ign. timing 12'

Ignition timing to be set at 28' @ 3500/4000rpm.

Perhaps someone can confirm these values.

Welcome to the forum David. ;) Must have been quite a thrill to have a brand new Esprit back in the day B)

Most of us work on our own cars except Paul C(too busy with important shed business) ;)

We will give you as much tech. advice and support that you need :)

The forum principle Bibs thinks the St*v*ns Esprits are better looking than our more beautiful and iconic Giugiaro styled masterpieces :P

Take no notice of him (most dont) :P

Thanks, they say for complete tune with valve adjust and replace timing belt, around 2k. I don't have much of a choice unless I want to do it myself, and that means my car will never run again LOL. I just have to decide whether I should pay now or pay later. Personally I like both the G and S cars, the G cars are more masculine and S cars softer, more sexy, must be that pretty women movie .

Pleased to see you on the forum, David. I'm amazed that you have had the car since new (1986) and it's only just starting to have problems. Looks like you can teach us a few things about how to carry out preventative maintnenace.

Thanks for the warm welcome Trevor and Wayne, I'll start chatting on the other esprite forums, but I know very little about my car, I'm just lucky plus I don't drive it much. Its getting the complete works done now so hopefully she'll run like new when I get it back.

The esprit *likes* to be driven! Problems usually start to arise when it is left as a garage queen.

Used regularly, a good example would be no more trouble than an ordinary car! (and you knw EXACTLY where your car has been and how it has been treated! ;) )

"When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked him to forgive me."
