Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted April 20 Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted April 20 Took delivery of this non-runner today, owned by @Red and in for C service, finalising a @Chillidoggy brake conversion, and MoT. This one has had a lot of money spent on LOTAC suspension and AP brakes all round, and has history at GST which always cheers me up. Off the road for 7 years though, I believe. Rear bushes replaced. fronts look original. Evidence of minor seepage from chassis pipes at front, but nothing nasty, it appears. Bit of pipework to do and then I can commission the brake kit. Thought I'd had a right result with valve clearances - inlet: 7,7,7,7,7,7,7,7. The universe is all about balance though. Exhaust: 9,11,15,13,13,13,12,11. So, one tower to look at. And finally today: whoops! Someone mada a boo-boo. Decent repair though. 7 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted April 22 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted April 22 Sorry Bibs, to qualify the above: all our conversations have been via PM, and the car was delivered by low-loader. We've never met! Anyhow, exhaust valve clearances done - 10,11,10,10,10,11,11,10 - and cambelt/tensioner all sorted. Cooling system closed up and filled. Thereafter I called it a day. The last pic will explain why. Those unfamiliar with the GT3 may not be aware that the tensioner bearing is different in that it needs an extra sleeve to take up the belt slack. Here's how it looks. Once pressed on, it's secured with a large circlip. I always go at these with a wire brush attachment to clean up the belt contact surface. Thought I'd also share what tools I use when removing a cam tower - particularly the exhaust one. This lot makes the job soooo easy. 3/8" drive swivel head - improves access. 12mm hex bit and adapter (not pictured, whoops) - for access plugs. E10 female Torx socket, 13mm hex socket, 75mm extension bar and - crucially - 40mm extension bar - combined variously, these give great access to the tower bolts, especially the lower ones. Powerful magnets - placed on top of each bucket prior to tower removal, these should secure each shim on the underside of its bucket. Nothing worse than dropping more than one shim! small diameter telescopic swivel head magnet - gets in the access holes and draws out the tower bolts. They can be awkward! 3/8" torque wrench - ALL bolts (cam cover, cam tower, and access plugs) have important torque settings. There's a tendency to overtighten cam cover/tower bolts, and this is a very bad idea. 10mm combination ratchet spanner - in the likely event some of the access plugs are difficult to get at with the torwue wrench, the 10mm spanner can be applied to the hex, and the torque wrench will engage with its open jaw. A simple formula will achive the correct torque. Still awake? And finally, went downhill fairly rapidly this afternoon, so thought I should check... It got me eventually! 5 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden. Gold FFM Popular Post Sparky Posted May 3 Author Gold FFM Popular Post Report Share Posted May 3 Day 12, and still testing positive! Put in a few hours yesterday and today, but really wiped out at the moment so taking it slow. C service complete including exhaust valve clearances, with only a few extra bits and pieces. Now finishing the install of @Chillidoggy's brake conversion kit. There were some pretty scary flares here! I'll bleed the brakes and adjust the vacuum tomorrow, then time for a test drive. Finally, a curious find. This steel-braided hos was annoying me whilst changing the oil filter. I assumed it was a long and weirdly-routed clutch hose but when I traced it, it led to this: Seems the oil switch has been installed remotely! It's mounted next to the coil packs. Different. 3 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden.
Chillidoggy
From my kit fitting instructions - "1. The original Esprit brake pipes must be flared DIN pattern to suit the connector and formed to fit so that there is no undue radial strain on the proportioning valve fittings." Seems to me that whoever fitted it failed to read, or follow, the instructions! Quote Margate Exotics.
Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 4 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 4 I get a funny feeling they might have been there from long ago, but can't imagine why they would have been joined at that location. Unless it had a DM unit replacement in the past, and someone cut the pipes to get it out? And agreed, bad flares. Red
Those flares were my handy work from a previous attempt with another master cylinder, and part of the reason that bit was left for you Sparky 😁. I didn't want to invest in a better tool for one use. Is there a brown wire going to that oil switch? There's a switch under the right hand side of the dash and one in the centre console that I haven't worked out the purpose of. I think one goes to a radar jammer, but I don't know which position is on and which is off! 😆 Look after yourself. Don't kill yourself so I get my car a week earlier. Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 4 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 4 Aha! The smoking gun. 🙂 The pressure switch has the wire I'd expect, and certainly shouldn't be linked to any dash switch. Somebody's simply moved it away from the block for reasons I can't understand. I'll take a look; maybe you have an ejector seat? Afraid it's not in my nature to take it easy. I'm just desperate to get it through a ticket. If rain holds off, I'll bleed the fluid through this afternoon and run it around the block. MoT currently booked for 1130 tomorrow. Exciting! 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden.
