Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 23, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 23, 2022 @skiing Henry's S3 back after a breakdown that may have been fuel pump. His breakdown guy got it running but around 30 seconds WOT ensued due to jammed throttle. So now she's very poorly. Going to remove head to see what might be going on. Bouncy valves maybe. It'll be so much FUN as the car is, putting it mildly, a bit of a mongrel. 2 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. andydclements
Get the lathe in action, use a decent bit of oak and create a replacement piston.

Gold FFM skiing Posted May 23, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 23, 2022 I am currently making sacrifices to the Lotus gods for it to be head only... which I am sure can be whittled from oak?

Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 23, 2022 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 23, 2022 The Exotics International Board Of Post Censors has rated this post NOPE Contains bits of metal, mild owner peril and implied monumental expense It ain't pretty. Exhaust valves clearly couldn't keep up. Photos show the result. Also some stuff that really winds me up, but I won't comment further on that. Damage is extensive, and some debris, although minor, is in the sump. As far as I'm concerned there's only one safe option... Didn't know Lindt made camshafts. Tut tut. To avoid an attack of the vapours, look away now... Exhaust manifold is soooo much fun. So, camshaft, valves, springs, guides, buckets, cam tower - and Lordy knows what once the head is off. Poor Henry. 11 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden. andydclements
@Sparky likes Lego, this is similar and about as strong. I have to admit to being surprised by the cam shaft lobes. I thought the other object would give way much easier and so not damage those, perhaps goes to show just how bad this particular event was. Chin up @skiing and keep smiling.

Chillidoggy
Good grief! Not much more to be said apart from that's gonna cost. Those M8 bolts though: the pinnacle of bodgery. 1 Quote Margate Exotics.
Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 24, 2022 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 24, 2022 @Bling wide open throttle, no load. Eventually something will lag behind and valve/piston contact will occur. Thereafter, mayhem. I too am shocked at the camshaft in particular. The amount of shrapnel is phenomenal. Maybe something substandard in play? 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden. Popular Post sailorbob
Probably the cast iron cam followers were cracked and let go. It's probably worth replacing them all with steel ones for peace of mind.
Gold FFM skiing Posted May 24, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 24, 2022 I have heard of the followers letting go - so agreed, would be sensible. Anyone know where you can get a new exhaust camshaft? Assume it is a 107 one as the engine is HC...
Choppa
Ouch, that looks really messed up, I look forward to the next set of photos from @Sparky to see how the pistons fared. Hope they survived the mayhem. In answer to your question, and I'm sure you've looked already but the Lotusbits site lists a 107 cam @ £50 and a complete NA HC head inc valves @ £500 1 Quote Normally Aspirated - and lovin' it! andydclements
Well @Sparky ? I've not yet seen the photos of the engine having been stripped, parts procured, engine re-assembled and installed, what's been keeping you? I'm thinking you're going to use some excuse like not enough hours in the day for that, or, you've had to eat & sleep. Your audience awaits. 1
Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 25, 2022 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 25, 2022 Not often you'll hear this, but I concede. 4 downpipes intertwined like spaghetti junction; it's ludicrous. 7 nuts off, 3 on top that are chocolate amd nothing can be got onto them, 2 underneath that are so rusty that they'll have to be ground/chiselled off, if you can get any tool near them. Two of the pipes pass through the chassis, so neither head nor engine can be removed with them in place. This needs to go into a workshop facility with air and oxy. Personally I'd cut the crazy thing off and put something normal on. It looks like it was fabricated by Salvador Dali's plumber. Checking under the head is moot anyway. Given the amount of debris found, everything has to come out for full dismantling/clean/rebuild at the minimum. 2 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. sailorbob
A Dremel with a flexible shaft attachment has gotten me out of the mire with similar access constraints before. The studs will inevitably get sacrificed though.
Gold FFM Sparky Posted May 25, 2022 Author Gold FFM Report Share Posted May 25, 2022 I have such, but need to get a load of new bits. Even then, access to those lower ones is abysmal. TBH though this system is nightmarish. It has never fully sealed (6 slipjoints) and is in contact with the chassis in 2 places. It was never right from the day I met it. I think it's time to lunch it. 1 Quote British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland. And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden. andydclements
Time to bin it (the exhaust), for the reasons you've given plus I'm sure I can see holes in it (the pipe next to the one with a jubilee clip). It does sound as though this repair could creep in terms of scope, but resolve several other things at the same time.

Choppa
So did a P.O. build a bespoke exhaust system onto the engine in situ without any regard for how it might ever be removed in the future? That reciprocating saw is a thing of beauty in the right hands! Edited May 25, 2022 by Choppa 1 Quote Normally Aspirated - and lovin' it!
