exeterjeep
If my field faced south rather than north, I would be tempted to have some of it growing solar panels. I'd get better return from that than renting it out to a neighbour to keep her horses in.
Gold FFM Escape Posted July 26, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted July 26, 2022 How can it be considered 'green' if you're converting field to barren solar farms? Apparently some solar panels have to be deactivated if it's too sunny, because either the convertors overheat or the local grid is unable to handle the power injected. Definitely not the answer it is hyped to be, but fair game to those who got a good financial deal installing them. Quote I have made many mistakes in my life. LotusLeftLotusRight
So hosepipe bans are on the way for many areas of England. Well I’ve been in West Wales for the past couple of days and it been raining for most of that time and is forecast to continue for the foreseeable. 16 degrees today and the flora is lush and verdant. It’s like living in another continent, compared to my home in East Northamptonshire with our parched lawn, recent record temperatures and hardly a drop of rain all summer and in the weeks to come. Why can’t we move the water around the UK from where it’s plentiful to where it’s needed?
Popular Post oneshot
We do - Birmingham gets its water from Wales (Elan Valley). Indeed they built some new pipes recently so that the old Victorian ones could be repaired. I had a student quantity surveyor working on the project. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-birmingham-49489065 4 Quote Dave - 2000 Sport

Water is heavy and it takes a huge amount of energy to pump it long distances. They do use canals, rivers etc to move water, but the main problem is that many people choose to live where the water isn't - i.e the South and specifically the south east. So a higher population density with a lower propensi8ty for rain = problems. 1 Quote I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way. Bibs
Our local reservoir in Kent has capacity for 31 billion litres of water and is currently 64% full. That said, 70% of the water we use is groundwater but it's nice to know there's plenty in reserve. https://www.southernwater.co.uk/water-for-life/reservoir-levels 1 Quote 88 Esprit NA, 89 Esprit Turbo SE, Evora, Evora S, Evora IPS, Evora S IPS, Evora S IPS SR, Evora 400, Elise S1, Elise S1 111s, Evora GT410 Sport Evora NA For forum issues, please contact the Moderators. Gold FFM C8RKH Posted July 31, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted July 31, 2022 Kent uses around 520m litres of water a day. LotusLeftLotusRight
Just noticed on the BBC News website that hose pipe bans will be issued in Kent, Sussex, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Kent and Sussex are perfectly understandable, but Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire? WTF! I’ve been in West Wales for the past 12 days. It only stopped raining here a week ago! The temperature has barely breached 20C! It’s 21C as I write this. Sure it is due to warm up to a barmy 28C by the weekend, but then it’s straight back to 17/18C and plenty of rain. So basically they’ll have had 2 weeks without rain, just 4 days over 25C, the fields are green, the lawn is OK and yet Welsh Water still thinks a hosepipe ban is necessary! Back home it hasn’t rained for 2 months, all the grass is dead and we had 40C temperatures, but no hosepipe ban yet.
Bibs
I think I posted above but our largest local reservoir still has over 2bn litres of water left. You'd think they base their planning on it not raining for the next 4 years! 1 Quote 88 Esprit NA, 89 Esprit Turbo SE, Evora, Evora S, Evora IPS, Evora S IPS, Evora S IPS SR, Evora 400, Elise S1, Elise S1 111s, Evora GT410 Sport Evora NA For forum issues, please contact the Moderators. One problem is that an area that's normally quite damp doesn't always have a large reserve. Here in East Anglia we know we have some dry spells and have a lot of food production which means that dry spells = heavy usage to water crops, so rivers etc get used heavily. As a result, they've resorted to big infrastructure to move water within the region to help balance the availability to the need. If we didn't normally have dry spells they'd have not bothered with that big pipe.
Gold FFM Escape Posted August 9, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted August 9, 2022 The hot weather we're having lately has presented me with an unexpected problem. I like to take the Jag out with the top open, but if I park in the sun for too long she'll refuse to start. Never a problem when parked inside or somewhere cool(ish), but she seems to dislike the sun. I can hear the solenoid engage and feel the starter motor want to spin, just not with enough power to actually turn over the V12. My first thought was worn brushes, so I had the starter rebuild, by the same reputable specialist we always used. Now it's better, but still not reliable. So I can drive the car, but am reluctant to park to have for a drink or such. No good! Wiring has been checked and an extra earth strap fitted to the engine. Under bonnet temperature doesn't seem to matter, she'll start first go after a run as long as it's not too hot outside. Only thing I can think of is the battery being unable to supply the high current necessary for starting when warm/hot. Voltage drops to 9V while trying to start, but will stablise and not decrease much even after multiple attempts to start. All ideas welcome, even if it is a bit of topic. Filip Filip - I think it may be more due to a camshaft position sensor, vapourisation of fuel when hot etc.. It could also be due to low coolant levels (check the expansion/header tank and the CTS - Coolant Temperature Sensor). Also in summer months in hot countries it may be worth changing to a thicker grade oil. And, of course, if your battery is low on charge it won't have enough to power the starter motor It could be lots of things really but a few extra things to consider 🤔 Hope this helps and you bottom it out. PS my 1st Lotus Elan (M100) always started 1st time when cold. When warm it was different and required quite a few cranks and turns of the starter motor which sounded horrible and was embarassing if people were watching. It was entirely due to hot fuel vapourisation issues 😕 Edited August 9, 2022 by Rambo
Gold FFM mayevora Posted August 10, 2022 Gold FFM Report Share Posted August 10, 2022 Same right across the whole of Europe right now. Hasn’t rained for weeks now. LotusLeftLotusRight
Haha. That’s another story. Late Spring, I planted some grass seed on an area of the lawn, which gets little sunlight. The cat thought I had made a new outside litter tray and would just dig it all up and do her business in it every day. The grass seed never had a chance. I even tried to deter her by constructing a framework of canes and string over the affected area, but it didn’t make much difference. In hindsight it was a waste of time anyway due to the drought.

Fuel vapourisation is a known problem for hot starts with the V12, removing the fuel cooler seems to have solved that (once the engine is turned off it actually becomes a heatsink). Maybe I wasn't very clear, the problem I'm having now is that the starter isn't turning the engine, so it can't fire. Once it does turn, it immediately comes to life with a steady idle. So the problem must be the starter circuit. And probably not at the engine side, because only outside temperature seems to matter, not the actual engine temperature. ChrisJ
This could go in the happy thread as well. Put our pool up this week. Hadn't done so before as we were away from 20/7 to last weekend and I really didn't want to come back to a green pool. Bought it and use dit all through the lockdown summer but didn't use it last year as my wife was building a patio - she needs to redo it, as it isn't quite level, as the water shows. It's a 12ft diameter, 1m deep, Bestway above ground pool, use some water hammocks and the depth doesn't matter. Bought a larger sand filter pump last year, so this is it's first use, and it is pumping the water through 3 x solar heaters - although I'm not sure they are needed this year. Instructions say 2 hours a day should be enough for our pool, so not too expensive to run either. The pool in the hotel we were in in Mexico City was hotter than bath water, and was horrible, and most of the pools during our trip across Mexico were relatively warm, and not ideal for cooling off.
