Please could someone explain to me how the variable traction control works on the 380/430 cup cars??

I was thinking of asking a similar question, but on the 410 'simple' Track mode, which you have a @Bibs answered .

So on the Cup cars, does the variable slip control also turn off the stability control, or is it independant?

This post a couple after it suggest that when variable slip mode is enabled the stability control is disabled.

What @electro_boy says is true. The way the various features and modes interact is quite complex and I found I needed to make my own summary notes in order to get my head around it properly. I'll paste them here in case you find them useful @EX16FUN

• From the owner's handbook, the car features:
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) - performs per-wheel brake modulation during limit braking; always on
  • Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) - maximises brake pressure during emergency braking; also always on
  • Traction Control - uses throttle reduction and brake intervention to control wheelspin, integral to ESP
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP) - uses throttle reduction and brake intervention to enhance vehicle stability in extreme manoeuvres, across four modes as follows:
    • Tour - default mode, intended for normal road use; ESP fully active, exhaust valve opens only at high throttle/rpm, continuous rev limit reduced to 6,600rpm [stated for Sport 350, which is the base model referred to in the Cup 430 handbook supplement]
    • Sport - for road use, ESP reduced, no throttle reduction on understeer, exhaust valve open at idle and during medium or greater throttle applications; continuous rev limit 7,000rpm
    • Race - for dry track use only, optimised traction and corner exit characteristics with reduced ESP intervention, exhaust valve always open, engine idle speed increased to 900rpm and continuous rev limit increased to 7,000rpm
    • ESP off - as Race mode but with no ESP intervention at all
  • Lotus Traction Control (LTC) - variable TC, works only with ESP off (430 Cup handbook supplement confirms that only ABS and HBA remain enabled in this case)
• From Lotus's website car also features:
  • Cornering Brake Control (CBC) - enhances cornering stability by reducing brake pressure on an inside wheel or increasing the braking pressure on the outside front wheel
  • Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) - enhances stability by limiting rear brake pressures if the ABS is close to being activated when not required

  • Tour - for tightest possible control, quells under/oversteer by cutting throttle aggressively combined with brake intervention (Understeer Recognition feature is unique to this mode)
  • Sport - allows oversteer and understeer up to a set threshold; quite heavy in reintroducing throttle once car is stabilised
  • Race - track-only mode requiring an oversteer event to establish grip threshold rather than using a fixed limit
