I was in 6th form at school, watched/supported the Team of the 80s, and still keep an eye on their results now, but it doesn't really grab me. I'm a hockey person. International Tournaments are different, the World Cup especially - Mexico 70 was my first, and I have 1 fully complete sticker album and 1 almost complete. I tend to watch a fair bit of the coverage for this event. However, this year - meh.... I really can't be bothered. Saw the BBC advert for it, not really like the Italia 90 promotions. I watched the 1998 WC England vs Tunisia match at the National Sports Club in Kampala with 50+ Ugandans. They were having an argument as to who to support, Tunisia as they were African, or England as they had black players playing for them. The FA in this country is a disgrace in their capitulation. They bang on about inclusion and driving out division in the sport from the highest levels all the way down to grass roots - and rightly so. BUT on the biggest stage - they’ve basically backed down and not called out Qatar and their appalling attitudes. The whole Team should have been back on a plane by lunchtime. A disgraceful shower of cowards and bastards - and shortsighted at that. If Harry Kane had ignored this mandate - then he would have added huge value to his own brand image as a result. As it is - I see the whole team as hypocrites whom will take the knee while supporting a regime whom executes people because of whom they choose to love. Unfortunately both are so intertwined now and can’t be separated. There is just as much (rightly) Political talk per game than football talk. Personally I love football (almost as much as Rugby) but having supported a Club team for 55 years who have never won anything, I do so look forward to the Football World Cup to the slight, very slight possibility of just maybe winning. (Someone has to) The players themselves are kind of in a no win position. We all know they are a bunch of extremely, ridiculously highly paid individuals but many of them will only get the 1 opportunity to play for their Country at a World Cup - the pinnacle of a whole career and just maybe the most memorable moments of their entire life. I’m sure all they want to do is kick a ball and play football without all the added pressure and advice of they should be doing this or waring that. If FIFA have come out and said anyone warring the armband will be yellow carded, it doesn’t leave them much choice - Unless every player from every Country comes out and sticks two fingers up at both Qatar and FIFA. It’s no secret, FIFA are the big disgrace for awarding the World Cup to this backward Nation. We all have a responsibility to call out discrimination and hate. It’s wrong. Even the FA are massive on this. Why is it different today with Qatar On another note the FA also represent the lionesses. Not sure if anyone knows - but a lot of the team are indeed LGBT. So the FA absolutely owe it to them to support that. Or is it just womens rights aren’t important to the FA. FIFA did nothing then and surely that was a whole lot worse than Qatar? Of course Qatar should never have been awarded the WC in the first place. England were superb though lost focus at the end. Wales were the opposite and rubbish to begin with and then the best team in the second half. They are killing Protesters, Women and Men and sentencing them to death for having an opinion on freedom. As for the above comments about making a stand. Whilst I agree, FIFA had made it impossible to protest with a Rainbow Armband. The only way this could have worked is if all the teams had reused to go at all and sadly there is too much involved for that such as FIFA saying if people refused to go (Denmark and Netherlands did think about it) then they would be banned not only from this tournament but the next 3. FIFA is the issue here. I think they should be disbanded and a new organisation set up run by the Countries themselves.
