white smoke and oil in exhaust

Recommended Posts

well now got me second esprit  gonna use this one as an everyday car. What i have though is on fisrt start up and driving all is fine but once warm i am getting white smoke from the exhaust and i also notice there is oil at the end of the exhaust pipe. Any suggestions on this before i endevor to take the head off  (this wil be a first, but a learning cure at the same time if it comes to it) Also i took the plugs out after the run and there was no signs off oil on them. I`m thinking either turbo or valve seats, would i be on the right lines?

p.s carb model stevens

Valve seats, No, you probably mean valve stem guides. I would say if you're not getting any oil on the plugs, rule out the inlet valve guides, but keep the exhaust guides in as a possiblity. but...

If you're getting white smoke, that's water. Have you got antifreeze in? If so, sniff the exhaust (don't try and kill yourself with the gasses), but it may well smell sweet (sugary, not some modern phrase refering to nice).

The oil and water could be un-related, or not, I'd rule out head gasket and rings etc for oil if the plugs are clean.

Compression test it, satisfy yourself the complression figues are OK and even, if they're low/ uneven, look at the head.

To get unburnt oil coming out of the exhaust would require SEVERELY worn exhaust guides and I think that the engine would sound and run badly. For this reason I would suspect a worn seal on the exhaust side of the turbo. The turbo is fed with oil under pressure and will therefore leak at quite a rate if the seal has gone, certainly enough to make the exhaust wet with oil. Valve guides are not fed with oil under pressure and although if worn can make an engine smokey I have never known them bad enough to actually make the exhaust wet with oil.

Those are my thoughts!

The trouble with that is simple, he doesn't have a turbo, if it was a turbo car I would agree with you cmpletely. The oil could buid up over a long period of time, and if the car isn't used for long runs, it may not get hot enough to burn it away, so eventually make its way through to the end, unlikely as it is.

It's a non turbo, so if the plugs are clean the oil has to be getting in after combustion, that only leaves 2 real options, valve guides, or oil is dripping from somewhere else and entering the exhaust, through some hole or something. I cannopt se the second as a real option, so the impossible is removed, leaving the improbable as the only possible option.

Hi,

just to clarify it is a turbo model. sorry. I think by the looks of things the turbo will need a look at first. I will investigate this and update, need to have a good run over the car as i was too eager to get it on the road (typical) and have a blast. I do know the conciquences of this can be severe, but hey ho thats the chance. Think i`ll go and have a good look and get back to ya all.

many thanks

failing turbo is alot easier to rectify then failing valve guides! Good luck and keep us posted on the result

UPDATE: me to eager to get me foot on the pedal, turns out there is what seems to be crate oil in the engine, so all cleaned out and good. Whilst i was there i have put a new cambelt, aitcon belt etc... Gotta say the cambelt was easier than i thought. Had to do it outside with axle stands as me other esprit is in bits again  love it. But all in all took about 4 hours, once i get me ramp in the garage i should be able to replace this in about 2 hours, will make life so much easier. But the car is now running well, and shall be out for a rag later :harhar:
