What speeds do you shift at?

Recommended Posts

For the first 10 minutes from a cold startup, I take it pretty easy. The ratios seem perfect for shifting at 3000 and picking up the next gear at 2000. This holds true from 1->2, 2->3, and 3->4. A bit more aggressive once the engine is warm is shifting at 4000 an picking up the next gear around 2700, 2900. This is in the suburbs, not city or country driving.

What do you think, is this all too conservative? What are your shift points?

Pretty much like yours.

Usually I shift below 3000rpm. but sometimes just to "show" I shift 4000-5000rpm. :P

I'm also driving very easy when car is cold (that affects all my cars).

Check my blog and leave comments/suggestions Jussi's photography blog

when the car is cold, i skip 2nd gear altogether. those rpm/speed shift rules have so many exceptions that it isn't useful to compare them. try a more specific situation: starting from zero, what is everyone's shift sequence to get up to 60mph fastest in a straight line?

the jump to 3 isn't that bad, and the car doesn't complain as long as i have the necessary forward motion. it's common practice at the local lotus club, because it saves the weak synchromesh on 2.

Cold I alwasy shift before boost comes in - so about 3000ish

Warm, I short shift first to second - never change up above 3000 or kerrrunch :P (poor 20 year old gearbox)

Than bladder the crap out of it up to the BHP peak aroun 6,500 ish when the change point is perfect so that when you go to third (or whatever) you will always end up at the Torque peak :P now THAT'S design!

Errr.. quickest way to 60 is off in 1st at 3k rpm to 6.5k and the rest in 2nd of course!

Just wave goodbye to your Crown wheel and pinion!

Incidentally I ALWAYS double declutch whether going up or down!

Down is the typical heel&toe blip...

Up... It gives time for the revs to settle just enough to take the strain off the synchro :P

I currently sit in my car and pretend to change gear, I can make really good engine noises and even skid sounds when the road is quiet,

I have the video footage of me overtaking an aston martin at speed just pre the engine packing in, not impressed, do to the car what its built to do and she pops, wouldnt have happenned if it had of been white.

:P Low blow!! :P err and EVERYTHING!!!

I didn't have a clue! Didnt THINK I was being a twat at the time... but in hindsight I was...

I spent HOURS going over and over what happened and accepting it was 110% entirely my own fault, no excuses, caveats, or exclusions was the only way I was going to LEARN from my mistake and not doom myself to repeat it!

Too much right foot too soon when the wheels weren't straight and then reacted incorrectly when she power oversteered!

It looked nice when it came out of the blue smoke pouring out the back of my car and pi*ed pass me as if I was stood still, ONE DAY MR BROWN ONE DAY!

I sent an email to aston martin a few years ago as they had a 1969 silver birch DB5, I asked if they would take pity on me and swap it for my cavalier, they sent a letter back saying yes no problem marc but just make sure there is 120k in used notes in the boot, one day I will take that email and a cavalier down there and collect my car! umm and now for the hard bit, where do I find 115k?
