How to decipher bearing codes?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I have tracked down my gearbox whine to one of the 30208A taper roller bearings that supports the crown wheel assembly. This is manufactured by FLT of Poland. There is no problem sourcing a new 30208A of a different brand, but I am now curious:

What do the suffix letters on a bearing indicate, e.g.

there are 30208, 30208A, 30208J* etc. which I assume are all subtly different in some way - possibly interchangable, possibly not.

Is anyone aware of any resource on the internet that deciphers/cross refers bearing codes, something I guess would be useful to us all.

cheers
