Custom SAMCO hoses

LEC have organised a set of hoses for the Elan with Samco. It seems to have gone pretty well and I think Samco are still giving a discount for people who buy one set some time after the group buy. Here's the LEC thread if you want to check it out.

I bought mine a couple of months ago and still got the LEC discount. There was no haggling, I just mentioned LEC and was automatically offered the discount. Samco will also supply them fitted with s/steel clips for about

If you need my hoses let me know.....

Currently the front end is off my car so all the front hoses are available for use......

The engine is out so all the engine hoses are available.......

I've got a brand spanking new upgraded coolant kit not yet fitted thats available......

and my interior is out so I can get to all the heater matrix type hoses......

Let me know if and what is needed.....

Just a side issue, there are new alloy pipes included in the kit so making a set just for upgraded systems is probably not the best of ideas.....

If we list the hoses that are needed for each kit then a different set can be made for each.... not that much different and then people can do what they wish...

Hi,

Ive been away doing some work... the remunerated type.

Daz, Ok I see what you've done now. I think you're right the pipes really needed are only 2 maybe 4 if you include the front radiator connectors (and that just for the nicety of silicone). Looking at 46.01B I'd like a 59 and a 77 that fits my coolant modded car. If designing from scratch it would make sense to go straight from the through pipe to the water pump with a T/Y section (this deletes 5 components !).

Im in the same boat Simon everything is out and in pieces. I figured that if someone was going to the trouble of replacing pipes they would naturally want to install the cooling mod if it wasnt there already, plus a custom pipe with a T/Y in it at the right place would make it pretty easy to do. BTW thanks for sorting Mark out with carb adaptors, he sent me a very reasonable quote and all I need to do now is find my cheque book

I have found and attached the original Lotus service note regarding the cooling system

Nice to know the Elan project worked out OK.

Hi,

Sent this off to the 2 silicone hose contacts I (Samco and Pipelines). If anyone knows of other good quality manufacturers let me know.

The idea (subject to change) is to get a pipe in the shape of the blue dotted one, the bypass diameter is up for discussion, if we stick to the original then owners could swap this in with no other changes, if we go with the cooling mod spec diameter then this of course makes it easy for those who have this. Personally if the original spec is more popular I could live with a coupling reducer

Thought I would add these. Shows the differences between the LC & HC pipes into the water pump.

I've always been curious why a standard set of Samco hoses hasn't been offered for the variations of cars. I would look into buying it for my S4 as they do wear and age and look knackered and mine are nibbled from rodents too. They would definately set the engine bay off nicely.

Count me in for a set of S4 hoses.

That's interesting. I'd still like to have some more clearance by locally forming the pipe to avoid that pulley though.

It would be ideal if we could engineer a hose that could be fitted to as many cars as possible, perhaps with some trimming here and there, I assume that later cars stayed with the HC cooling plumbing as in 46.01B. If this is true then both systems have a requirement for a T/Y outlet just before the main through pipe on the pump feed section.

So far that makes 6 or 7 interested if we include the modern variants... almost half way

I think a lot of the owners of the Stephens have switched off to this thread as it seems tailored to the G cars. If it was thrown open to the whole group I reckon you'd get 3 times as many customers.

Many people, especially me, are not expert enough to know the differences between the oily bits of different models. If it could not be confirmed conclusively over the forums maybe a few volunteers with a cross section of cars would visit a company like Samco etc who could measure them up. Perhaps with a bit of goodwill Lotus could help with some info, they may even want to stock the end product?? As mentioned it seems surprising a UK specialist hasn't done this already.

Mark,

Yeah, you're right. But I know even less about Stevens than G cars

Im using the information in the parts manual and service notes, if anyone could send me a drawing from the Stevens Part List that would be great.

At the moment Im concentrating on one pipe section which happens to be the most fiddly and awkward one on a G car and considering another 3/4, the rest are pretty standard parts and can be plucked straight from their catalogue without much trouble.

I hope to learn what the various companies require in terms of drawings/specifications and something about the nature of the tooling next week.

Ahhh... I forgot about that.

I was somehow magically made a member but I've never really looked into how to access the site.

Mark sent over the relevant info and it is the case that as far as the common S plumbing attached to the transfer pipes goes it is identical to the G HC spec 46.01B diagram with corresponding parts sharing the same part number.

Interesting to see the much simpler pipes into the radiator, I assume the fan switch has moved somewhere else, that might be a useful thing to do for G's too.

I note that the HC water pump inlet section takes a trip around the chassis but the LC doesn't...

Just out of interest I contacted Samco to see if they would consider doing a set of custom hoses.

Surely there are 15 owners that would go for this, if not immediately then over the course of a year.

Ambrose

Ambrose, I have a S3 1985, I'd be in for a set as my hoses will need replacing soon.

Hi Dave,

It gone a little quiet at Samcos end but it seems BigSi may have a lead about the tooling of custom hoses.

Thanks

Thanks Si,

Im really pleased we are making some progress.

If you can manage to get to it why not take pipe 65 off and leave connected to pipe 68 via the reducer 67 and give it to the chap as an assembly? I'd gladly post my assembly to you if that is problematic, it has the same gouge in pipe 68 that yours has which will indicate where a a clearance notch/different bend is required.

I think I tried venair, but no harm in try again.

Thanks

Ambrose

Hi Simon,

I make that about 10 S3T owner so far, which is very close to MOQ.

Im keen to find out how much the tooling costs, we should know after BigSi's visit to the supplier he mentioned.

"My LC enigine ran at approx 80c on my gauge, esp noticable when I put a new Rad in.

But my HC engine now shows just over 90c on the gauge, but my fans kick in at 94c.

just thought i would ask, the fitting that the front pipe goes onto is it part of the waterpump? i mean is the tube that it clamps over part of the pump? if so another option is to have the pipe cut at an angle and a new section welded to it that points away from the sprocket enough for it to fit that way. as for the rest of the pipes shouldnt be an issue, i have to finish my car before i can go anywhere.
