Guys,

Looking forward to driving my car on Monday, only thing is I have big reservations about the brakes, Ive had the big brake upgrade on the front this was done by PO, from P&M I think, however Istill dont think the brakes are anywhere near good enough to stop this car at speed... and this car is meant to be driven.. and will be.. :D , so the question is whats next... is there anything can be done to the rear or anything involving better hoses, servos etc...

I'm driving an SE High Wing at the moment with the AP-PRO setup from a Sport 350 and apart from the ABS they are incredible, but I think between

88 Esprit NA, 89 Esprit Turbo SE, Evora, Evora S, Evora IPS, Evora S IPS, Evora S IPS SR, Evora 400, Elise S1, Elise S1 111s, Evora GT410 Sport

AFAIK it's the best brake setup available, but I'm sure there are cheaper options, just giving you the best option in case you find a suitcase of cash

Thanks Bibs

I think Ill be doing something a bit cheaper for now, the problem I find is at junctions and roundabouts.. its great to absoloutly humiliate the boy racers but they outbrake you every time and end up getting round the roundabouts ahead of you.. its just not tennis.

Is it the ABS cutting in that's causing you problems, or brake fade or just a lack of stopping ability?

Not really sure if the ABS is actually enhancing the brakes at all, Ive drove MK2 Escorts and Cortinas wth better brakes than my Esprit in fact it has a very 70s feel about the whole car.. indicator swithes, windscreen wiper etc... its all new to me so this is prob very normal

Cheers

From what I have read, let's just say the ABS is not the most popular feature!

I'm so glad I have a carbed (ie computer free), pre abs, pre pas car!

I definitely have a thing against fly by wire cars :D

From what Ive read on other forums its a bloody liability can be very unpredictable Ive got it on my shopping car (Vectra) and is brilliant although I cant remember ever being in a position where its actually stopped me locking up.. but I suppose thats the whole point isnt it and I wouldnt of known anyway as it would of been doing its job.. does that make any sense... :D

I think you should know if it has - I am pretty sure they were all designed to make the brake pedal judder when the abs kicks in for precisely that reason - *so* you know it has.

:D Brakes are far overrated. Don't use them myself.

Did notice something very odd though the other day when I was modding my car (upside down in the footwell position), the Esprit has TWO accelerator pedals. No, I'm not joking. The 2nd is actually on the far LEFT hand side and is directly connected with the right hand one. You don't normally see it move because it's sited under the left foot rest. Very, very weird.

I couldn't believe it, now I've got to learn how to left foot gas, right foot brake and left foot clutch.

Hint: Don't take acid prior to working on your car!

Couple of things:

1) You won't appreciate the ABS on your car cos it doesn't have ABS

2) The brake set up that Dave had done on your car is pretty much the best set up you can get without going the AP Racing route that Bibs mentioned.

I think you just have to face facts that the brakes are crap and live with it. Depending on which pads you've got, the brakes will improve with heat so a bit of lively driving will make them feel better. Mine certainly work a lot more efficiently at the end of a run compared to the beginning.

Thats very interesting Ill have to have a word with Dave about this, thing is theres a big orange light on my dashboard that says ABS.. and you can hear it doing its stuff when you pump the brakes.. one of the known faults I knew about when I bought the car was the ABS light staying on all the time which it still does, Dave assured me he thought this was just a sensor thing, and the ABS was fine, maybe it isnt and the light staying on is relevant.

Highly bizarre - I was under the impression ABS was brought into production at the end of 1990 and wasn't put on any carbed turbos ?!?! It was an option on the SE from the end of 1990.

I'm quite prepared to be proven wrong on this and apologise if I am.

I count myself lucky I have a 1989 SE *without* ABS as its more trouble than its worth !!

Anyhow, my point still stands - the brakes are crap until you've warmed them up

Just had an Email off Dave the ABS is standard on my car as my car is a late 90 model one of the last carb turbos maybe even the last one!!! think it willbe getting dissconnected as its not worth jack.. its a shame about the shitty brakes you can never really let yourself go in it without that voice in the back of your head saying is the life insurance up to date.. :D
