I have a true passion with the ESPRIT and I bought a copy of each book published about the Esprit, about Lotus or sport cars with some pages described the story of the Esprit, even they are written in English, French, German....

Don't you do the same ???

Remy,

Quite a number of us helped you with this book. As a gesture of thanks / good will, you could have given a complimentary copy of the book to those people (I know you mentioned the Publisher wouldn't giving away copies but you could have paid for a few your self at cost). I think that was the very least that was expected, since we provided you with our time, our own car images and information. I think then people would be more favourable and help promote it, including myself, as I am sure the book is interesting.

I understand what you think.

But written a book about the Lotus Esprit in France is a big adventure and got a lot of difficulties.

Finding a publisher in France who is agree to publish a book about this fantastic sport car - not as famous as a Ferrari (!) - is very difficult. My publisher took the (financial) risk but could not offer each Esprit owner a copy of the book.

I want do that. If I could do that, I did it as the book was published.

I worry about that.

I managed to make this book because you helped me with pics of your Esprit. I know that but I told you that I could not give you a copy.

regards

I'm sure the problem with sales of your book is that it's in French only. Most people in the UK can't speak a of word of any language other than English ( me inclused ) ( and there are a lot of UK citizens who can't even read English ! ). My 350 pictures are in your book but I've not bought a copy as I can't read what you have written. If it was in French and English I'm sure it would sell much better.

Right then, said Fred.

That's the big question : Doing or not doing a book written in English ??

Why doing a book in English ?

2 beautiful books about the Lotus Esprit from Coterie Press have already been written in english by William Taylor and Jeremy Walton (I have 1 copy of each, even if I did not read the text in english, only for the pics and the fantastic work made by these 2 authors ! !).

That's the reason why I illustrated my book with beautiful and unpublished pictures : to create an interesting book for Esprit owners around the world reading English, French, German, Spanish, having a passion for the Esprit and looking for every book about their lovely sport car illustrated by picture never seen before.....

As I said, I have a true passion for the Esprit ! ! :smiling:

No.

Problem for us british is that unlike our european friends we do not

speak a second language. We go into mainland europe and take it

forgranted that if we speak to a frenchman or german in english that

he will understand, and most do and can talk back in english.

:(

For most british people, a book in german or french is a book they cannot

read. Whereas for a lot of german or french people, a book in english will be

a book they can read, at least fairly well?

I envy you your grasp of more then one language :D

Paul is totally correct in his observation. I am not saying this is good thing, I am just saying he is right with his comments. Alot of Europeans I have met have a good understanding of two/three differant languages but most Brits (not all but most) just speak the one.

However, saying that, I will probably still buy this publication sometime to add to the Esprit collection.

Remy, for someone with such a passion for the Esprit 4 of your 6 posts in over 2 years of membership of LEF have been today in this thread and the other 2 were both advertising the book too. We are the largest and busiest Esprit community worldwide by a long shot with over 3,600 members and 5,000,000 hits/month and I'd have thought you may wish to include more than just our pictures in your book. We are the people who own the cars and could have added a huge human interest to the publication.

I would think that if you wanted our members to be interested in your book then being an established member of the forum would have helped rather than coming on here to advertise your book (which is incidentally against the forum rules). Also bearing in mind that 'most' Esprits are owned by English speaking people with the main distribution of the car being the UK and USA that is of course going to narrow your market.

Don't misunderstand, I think that it's terrific that you've put in the years of time and effort to get this book done and I admire and share you passion but you are a stranger punting your wares on an audience that not only doesn't understand the text but feel aggrieved that they have been perhaps taken advantage of in your requests for their info and no comp copy in return. There have been threads on here in the past where we have discussed if you are a scammer up to no good as many of our members have had requests for pics and personal details from you.

As I said, best of luck but please don't be surprised at our members reactions and if you are the author of this book you should have made that clear in the first post in this thread, vested interest and all that.

Bibs has hit the nail on the head with his comments, especially about most cars being in the UK and USA.

I know it's a bit late now, but giving those who contributed pictures would have been a much better way to promote the book. It costs 35 euros, that's 20 quid. That's the retail price, what's the wholesale price ? Say half that ? That's a tenner a book. I'm guessing 30 people's photo's are used, so

Right then, said Fred.

Has anybody actually bought the book?

I myself will buy it when it becomes available here in Australia, BECAUSE it has my car in it!

Is there another book on the market that has 350 pictures of Esprits in it?

I reckon its gotta be worth a look...I would be interested to hear if someone has bought the book and what it is actually like...

I mean i really hate Oil Companies and Supermarket Chains as they rip us blind and we know we are being held for ransom,...but we still buy fuel and food.

I read the forum and hear about what a great community you guys have in the UK and US and get a kick out of seeing pics of your cars. it would be good to see some big photos in a book with some of our members beasties in it.

If anyone has a book can they let me know?

I'll wait until I see a secondhand one on ebay.

Seriously It is a bit of a kick in the you know whats to use every bodies photographs and then not even offer a discount. Photographs are normally quite expensive to buy from professionals and often the ones used in other books are copyrighted.Over the years I have bought(invested!) in a few sets of old slides mainly from Lotus F1 days in the 60's and each time the copyright has cost a fortune. That obviously why he's used our generosity ,and you can't blame him.Buying pics from other people would have cost a fortune as would arranging shoots etc.I personally think its a great idea to try and use unpublished photos, not only because of the obvious no cost reason but also because as you say the book is going to be very different.

Good luck to the chap but as I think Bibs said 6 posts and all are about the book and he's still not admitting he is the author in the one above.

Sorry I woke up in a bad mood.

Good Luck Remy,it was obviously hard work and you must be proud but maybe the goodwill has been lost in translation.

The Esprit you show on your profile looks interesting ,do you ever have any problems/issues you want to share with us all apart from the book .We are genuinely interested?

Regards

Richard
