Question

my speedo didnt work today for some reason, the needle didnt move and inch. tomorrow is supposed(yeah right) to be dry and sunny all day, so i intend to take off the gearbox speedo gearing and strip it to check it over and then put a drill on the speedo cable to see if the needle moves, im hoping that the cable hasnt broken or anything sill, prehaps the end is out on the rear of the dial so its binnacle off time.

any one esle got any suggestions?

Does the odometer work? or is the entrie speedo not working. It is fairly common for the worm gear inside the speedo to shear off. Not sure on your car but does your car have the one piece speedo cable or a 2 piece with the connector near the firewall? The cable just pushes in the back of the speedo. I have heard of people when removing the speedo cable from the box that a few have dropped some sort of part into the inside. Some sort of drive gear from what I recall.

mine is a one piece cable, so by taking the gearbox adapter off and putting a drill on its the first easiest place to check, then after that the fixing behind the dial which means off with the binnacle. nothing major to wort out though..... erm i hope!

Si,

My speedo assembly has a little (about 1' x 3/16') square shaft at the gearbox end of the worm drive, that has worn out by rounding at the end.

The problem was it wasn't protruding enough from the worm drive boss, so I heated up the boss and dripped some solder into it. I filed off the rounding on square drive unit and refitted it. All works fine now.

undo the drive from the 'right angle' unit attached the the box, then attach a drill to the cable, i did this and found it was the angle drive that was broken, the part is no longer available, but the internal gears are from your favourite parts supplier, SJ.

it is common for people NOT to grease the unit regular

well it would seem the bit that goes into the dial had come out, more than likely when i was checking for the water leak the other week. i had to take off the front dial cover, undo the screes behind that and undo the right side switch gear plate from underneath, then i ran the speedo cable back up into the rear of the binnacle and pushed it striaght back in first time!!

then put the other end back onto the gearbox adapter, all done now, hopefully i havent disturbed anything else or i wil have to get the front off again!!

worst thing is hilly after putting it all back together went out in her and the thing was still not working, so i undid the rear adapter from the gearbox again so i could pull the cable end through a bit, then fed it into the dial and locked it in then put the big metal outer sleeve over it then refitted the dash, then re-connected the rear adapter and it works fine now.

at elast thats sorted now and theres no danger of getting done for going over the speed limits.
