Front bumpers

Recommended Posts

The gap between my front bumper and the bodywork seems to be larger than it used to be. By coincidence, The Man with the Green Esprit at last week's field meet had bumper issues and discovered that the little plastic "screws" on the side of the bumper actually screwed into wood inside his car. He felt uncertain about the history of his car, so didn't know if this was standard practice or not.

So, what do those plastic screws bite into?

More than likely those "screws" are a push fit rather than screwed in. I have replaced my rear ones with new ones. The new ones I fitted have barbs on them which open out when they are pushed in

The internal panel of the front bumper on my 1981 S3 was also plywood which had completely de-laminated and so was falling off :)

I just ripped out all the manky wood and glassed in some alloy panels to enable the bumper to go back on, job done.....
