Calling all early-G Turbo Esprits!

Recommended Posts

G'day all!

History lesson

1980 was the first year that Turbo Esprit was produced (on assembly line). It started with the Essex. In 1980 there were only 57 production Turbo Esprit's made. Bibs tells me that 46 of these were Essex and 11 were 'standard' Turbo Esprit's.

My Turbo Esprit

My car is one of those 11 - a 'standard' 'production' Turbo Esprit (non-Essex).

The list...

I would now like your help to compile a list of chassis numbers for those 11 Turbo Esprit's. The list can be extended into early 1981, as well as pre-production and development models to ensure that it is comprehensive (but a chassis number is required). So here is a start...

Prototype chassis #...10858 (date unknown - colour-white)

Unkown buyer, chassis #...10930 (m'80 - colour-bronze) ----> 1st [?]

Per (from Norway) chassis #...10938 (Nov'80 - color-black) ----> 2nd [?]

Paul (from Australia) chassis #...10939 (Nov'80 - color-white) ----> 3rd [?]

Alireza (from Switzerland) chassis #...10952 (Dec'80 - color-red) ----> 4th [?]

I look forward to your response !!!

(Essex owners may post too, but please include that info)

Hi Paul ,My old Turo was 10962. It was also a dry sump car .Ex lotus Press car ,Then went on to become a Race car .The car is now owned by the Haynes Motor Museam ,Isold it to them 14years ago ......How time flys .Iwas also told that the car was sent to Pinewood Studios along with other Cars for evaluation for Filming .My car might of been one of the first cars to have used BBS Wheels .Sorry for not putting up date of registration etc .Iwill contact Lotus to find out those details .Good luck in your findings .Ithink the early Turbos are fantastic .When i sold the car i had a letter from Lotus saying how many Dry sump cars were built .Iwill contact the Museam and check..Cheers Mike

Its interesting to note that your chassis seem to sit in the middle of the known Essex versions?

I regularly sit in Essex #17 which is 10941 just two after your car?!!!

As has been discussed here before there were some known 'Essex' cars that were Essex spec without the colour scheme - though not recognised as proper Essex cars the suspicion is they were merely 'using up' the Essex bits.....

IIRC Essex 24 was renumbered to 100 as a special request for Mark Thatcher (son of Mrs Thatcher an Ex Prime Minister here) when it was sold to him.

Have you checked out the car in this thread?

http://www.lotusespritforum.com/forums/ind...showtopic=16953

The chassis number is listed in the ad.

Have you checked out these cars from the Esprit Registry thread?

Interesting list ! What about the cars between 10907 and 10930 ?

I think 10907-930 were skipped (although not 100% sure).

What is starting to really interest me is the 'supposed' 11 non-Essex turbo esprit's made in 1980... where are they and how do they fit into the VIN sequence?

Does the 11 include the prototypes and pre-prod'n cars?

And where are the 46 Essex cars?

The compiled list above of 1980 Turbo Esprit's (Essex&non-Essex) could not possibly be complete - need some more help!

Hi Paul - the Essex List is definitive as it was mainly collated by Brian Angus 'Mr Esprit' at Lotus.

He contributes on here on occasion - I have his ID if needed?

Also Steve Tryner is a member here who also helped and owns Essex 004.

Brian Angus knows the whereabout of most of the cars on the Essex list but obviously cannot reveal all to the public for confidentiality reasons. This includes the car we all suspect David Thieme still owns in Paris.

Again I have Steves ID if you want to discuss more..............

So according to your list, how many Essex Esprit are there?

Share this post

Link to post
Share on other sites

48 in total on the DB including Pre-Prod / Dev / LHD - I guess it depends if you think Pre-Prod/Dev are proper Essex but that all came from Mr Angus himself.........................

By the way whereabouts in Melbourne are you? Used to live near Dandenong meself!

So that means the first 4 non-essex cars are on this board ?

I would be surprised if pre-prod'n and dev't cars are included in the Essex range.

(eg. 10858 was the white lotus used in the opening scenes of 007 For Your Eyes Only)

I know at least one other early Turbo Esprit in Switzerland, fitted with the Compmotives.

I used to live very close to the guy as I often met him driving around my place back then. I've moved since then but I've heard the car is still with him and from the picture, he must be a member of some kind of Lotus club here. I'll try to reach him and get more info. Picture courtesy of a buddy (I suggest you all visited his website for nice shots of all kinds of amateur's cars) www.swisscarsightings.com

Hello, i'm a french lotus and james bond fan .By crossing any forums. I made an inventory of the data relative to cars used for the shooting of "For your eyes Only" in september '80 ans january '81

I have a question About The James Bond cars "essex models"

DVLA says.

#1

NCL 458V ( Colin Chapman's personnal car ????)

09/07/1980

SCCDC20A8AHD10858

Motor number : SCC912801118912

Color Blue / White / Copper

Developpement car

# 2

OPW 678 W

07/01/1981

SCCDC20A8AHD10930

Motor number : SCCD91080078603

Blue/White/Copper

# 3

OPW 654W

05/09/1980

Motor number : SCCC912801118912

Color : White/Copper

There's just 2 James Bond real cars Not 3.

One of car was one shell (without engine) for the explosions. it been able to be registered?

2 cars with the same motor number ? How to explain that?

I have another question with regard to my previous comment...

The story tells that 2 lotuses were at the same moment in corfu for the shooting. Somebody has already seen photos, with the 2 cars at the same moment ?

It is the same matter during the shooting to Cortina d' Ampezzo... There are no photos with 2 cars.

Just to revive this as I never answered (OK spotted!) Pauls question - Essex No.24 and 100 in that list have the same VIN as the cars plaque was renumbered after it was decided to switch from selling the car in Essex trim to other colours and without the stickers!

It was the car supplied to Mark Thatcher. My guess is they figured it would be a way of making it look like they were selling like hot cakes ("look we sold 100!"), when in reality sales struggled as the car was darn expensive at the time and not everyone liked the Essex colour scheme.
