Dave,

Engine mounts if I recall were fairly easy. Did mine whilst doing the fuel tanks last year.

As I remember I had the car on axle stands, undertray off and lid open. I then got a large load-spreading piece of wood and having loosened off all of the nuts and bolts (there's a heat shield adjacent the manifold that needs to come off for access) I just jacked the engine up a little.

Didnt take much to do. Accessible from underneath on both sides and from above on the drivers side (UK).

Im not sure its an official technique but there's a fair amount of pivot about the gearbox mounts to allow you to do this.

Cheers

ps - Ive changed my oil filter regularly and always fight it like you have despite smearing oil on the seal!

i need to change my mounts too. i'll try jacking the engine up like mentioned. didn't know it was that easy. as for the oil filter, it can be done from underneath with a strap wrench, removing no other parts for access. however, you need to have the car on a lift and stand upright to get enough leverage. when changing the filter at home, i always remove the air box and plenum. what a hassle.

thats what i tried to do. from underneath with a strap but it buckled the filter. then tried with a grabber that gripped the filter as you turned it with a ratchet, then a set of oil filter mould grips then stabbing it with a screw driver. then give up and started stripping it down. what a nightmare. never mind done now.

yer id be interested to see what you thought of the mounts. unfortunately i dont have a garage so its not so easy for me to do this sort of stuff. still have a damn good go though

Me neither! I use the old mans driveway - Im slowly sinking lots of jack shaped holes in his soft tarmac. Oops.

Forgot to mention i put the load spreading board across the centre of the sump covering it. Was told the sump casting isnt particularly strong so spreading the force such that its even along all four edges was essential.

Not being an expert on ally I just did as advised.

Hi Simon,

Sounds like engine removal with gear box will be a doddle if you had a hoist to lift it out with. I suppose it's all the connections to take off and put back which would be troublesome.

I imagine that engine removal to change the manifold isnt all that difficult after all.
