Uprated starter motor

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Is there any such thing as an uprated starter motor for the V8?

Does anyone know the cost of a standard one?

Thanks,

John

i use an "upgraded" one for several years now. Was a private project with help from a friend.

I regreased the planetary gears , he uesd a grinder and a file to reshape some carbon brushes

[from a truck -->therefore with more copper in the material ->therefore they can resist with higher current load ->relly good stuff for starting with "older"batterys  ]

The original spare, witch i'v got from "R&B" is still wrapped in oil paper. Have never used that one... .

Was something with around 800 "Deutsch Marks" or so (400Euros)

The "overhauling" of my old was "an hand for a hand" free work under friends... .

So gues what is best !

PS. the old brushes really looked like a "brush", they where splitted along the line into several pieces . Maybe the current flow under starting with the first battery has killed them... ??

Was wondering how you were getting along

Be careful with the starter...mine was 3rd party all singing and all dancing and the thing nearly burned the car down !!

Due to a design flaw it was able to leak water into it and nearly shorted the + terminal out to the chassis !

Also it was whirring away on my flywheel teeth as well because it didn't quite fit - so all around not much good.

With yours the car wouldn't really ahve been used as much, it should be a smooth job to re-furb / overhaul it, thats what I would do and it shouldn't cost and arm and a leg.

Look for signs of water ingress (blue deposits or rust) and other broken bits. The commutator and the brushes might be a problem but shouldn't be as the car is so young.

What can happen is a brush can crack and it then scours up all the comutator shorting some of the windings out. The fix is an easy one but needs a lathe and other specialist tools.

Many things can go wrong with them, if you get it looked at they can give you the best service (quite a few places do motor overhauls).

I done mine here : http://www.lotusespritworld.com/EGuides/EM...arterMotor.html

That was my old, now in the bin motor hehe, but you can see it's not a complicated process and shouldn't cost a bomb.

Hiya Jonathan,

To be honest, I've been soooo busy with work lately. I've not really had much time to sort the car out.

I did locate the main Earth from the engine to the chasis. I gave it a good clean, but to be honest it was in good shape. It was cleaned during the last service.

I'm sending the ECU off tomorrow for a check/repair. Once it's back I'll then change/refurb the starter.

Thanks mate.

John

230 QUID !!! (bet thats + vat)

Seriously, have it looked at, probably only needs the comm skimming and new brushes just for a laugh - wont set you back much more than 1hrs labour. You might find PNM or Esprit Engineering will take that on.
