test drive getting one!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm thinking of getting an Esprit, But trying to get a test drive is a nightmare, the dealer I have been to will only take me out in it i.e not let me drive, and then only if I'm serious about that car. I've never even driven one so I may not even like the thing!! I've driven an elise and a F355 and Porsche. But don't see the point of just going for a passaenger ride, I'm 34 with a good job, so it's not like i'm some boy racer!! oh it's an S4

Odd for a dealer - I thought their business was selling cars, and you can't buy one without taking it for a test drive. (If you're really interested, then I'd go back - give it a good looking over and ask to take it for a drive - They won't say no.

I bought mine from a dealer and never got questioned - I was Sh*t scared though - as it was my first time. I think we almost died twice. :)

Where is the S4 located ??

A little fess up here, the GT3 I bought, I never drove.

Becuase I didn't drive it I missed, warped front disks, shot suspension, gear change from hell....all of which I am in the process of fixing or have fixed and it cost me money.

The dealer (Kelvdon Lotus) obviously didn't trust me behind the wheel which is a fair enough but as I said no one is going to shell BIG money out for a car which they can't drive so lets take a hit on the price. In his defence he did take it for a good hoon you could sense there was nothing wrong with the car's performance, but then again I knew what it should feel like, a 1st timer wont.

I'd do it again, the Esprit is too rare to pass up if the car is otherwise good or (like me) you specifically want a certain model sometimes you have to take a risk - luckily the amount I knocked off the asking price is about the same as the restore costs.

I would speak to the dealer and tell him if he doesn't want to let you drive it he has to take a considerable hit on the asking price. the other way is to get them to draw up a 7 day return contract on the thing, if they're not going to let you drive it you want assurance that the clutch, brakes, suspension & 1001 other things arn't going to fail the instant you have the cash over.

Loads of peeps in Essex, I'm only 15mins from the tunnel and always up for a drive to see Esprits, so if you want someone to turn up there in their Esprit as well just ask, should shut the dealer up a bit - a private seller I can fully understand, but a dealer ? I thought they were in the business of selling cars...they need to get down to reality a bit if you ask me.

Have you got a garage to put it in? When i bought mine i told him i needed to see if it fitted, (if it didnt i prob wouldnt have bought it) he drove it to mine, just fitted in the garage & i drove it back.

You got to drive it, to much that could be wrong (or hidden) if your just a pasenger.

I bought mine from a dealer - only too happy to let me take a test drive. The salesman drove first to get it warmed up and show me and then we swapped over. Seems odd that a dealer doesn't want to let you have a drive.

Like I say if you're desperate to have a look to buy it let one of the locals know, I could do Saturday but at a push cus I was gonna do my brakes then....if you really wanna go I can pop into my uncles on the way cus he lives in Grays.

I think I might know which car you're on about as well - if it is what they are demanding is a full on joke - BUT if it's what you want sometimes you have to bend the rules as it were - as I say the Esprit in a specific colour / model is a very rare beast, if it's exactly what you want it's worth persuing - if not I'd tap this one on the head and perhaps come back later with a reduced offer :)

Hi it's a black one with Cream leather and Carbon fibre trim, supposidly only 38K on it but the drivers seat is very worn, is that right? A Honda shows no wear at 100K. (tempted by NSX)

It's up at great Dunmow at Paddocks.

The leather doesn't wear that well.

Bought my S4 at 42K and the drivers seat was worn with a small rip (1 inch) in one of the joins - the spot where PO obviously dug his elbow in to get out of the car.

Mine was advertised at 18k back in 2002 :) Took it for a test drive and said I'd pay 17k cash on the spot - take it or leave it. :)

Seems a high price - I hope it has the Brembos fitted (late 94 on).

38k means it's due a new manifold.

Padocks is a joke - I wonder if it's the same Black L reg I was looking at way back last year. I called up spoke to the guy then aranged to view it the next day, ended up messing The Del around something chronic to get him to come down and check it out with me then the guy became all funny and we ended up skipping it.

It's not even a Lotus dealer commanding UKSC (ie over the top) prices, when I talked to them they didnt sound that switched on...can't understand why they came to 18 grand asking price but there ya go - I got my car for considerably less, from a Lotus specialist, less miles 4-5 years younger. If the car was at Stratons or Sporto I can understand cus you'll get backup with it, from these guys ? Nah...

For an '93 S4 it's WELL over priced, I'd only pay this kinda money if I was desperatly after a Black S4 and even then I'd have to knock money off, otherwise there are other cars about - they do come up here and there so you can always take your time.

I think I may give it a miss, he had a different black one last year on an N plate but that looked better condition. His had the high wing and the X180 ages.

I'm into Range Rovers as well and his are always overpriced.

For the manifold - 450 + another 450 for installation. They go around 40k.

The 93' model S4 are going on ebay for around 12k

I wouldn't pay any more than 13-14k from a dealer. And cos he's not a Lotus dealer the warranty will mean nothing.

For 18k you can realistically look at a Late (low mileage) S4 / GT3 / Early V8. The S4s is still holding it's price pretty well.

Hey all.

I have never had a problem test driving any of the Esprit V8s. I eventually bought one, but I have test drove several. I'm 34 and never had a problem test driving any exotic. Heck, I test drove a Merciulago when I was buying My Esprit, knowing I can't afford one.. It was a fun drive though! Lamborghini's are no hype.

Where can you find a V8 for 18k? They're still aroung $50k US for a decent V8.

Guest esprit geoff

I know the Paddocks Garage - looked at a few Esprits there over a year ago, over priced and in not great condition. The guy I spoke to did know his stuff, but I wasn't impressed by their prices and stock.

Geoff.
