wastegate actuator diaphragm

...not sure if my wastegate capsule actuator is shafted, but I was wondering if it is possible to buy overhaul parts for the capsule and in particular a replacement diaphragm.

Tried searching the forum archive, but no joy...

dont think you would ever get the capsule to re seal ian

to be honest if you have never replaced it, it is worth doing anyway. they go weak over time as you probably know. it wont be your diaphram as all that can happen to that is rip or get a hole in it but that would give you overboost. the spring is probably weak anyway but wouldnt cause an instant low boost fault

I don't think you can get overhaul kits for these, aren't they sealed units? which is a shame as a new one from SJ is around

No, it's certainly not the problem with my S4... that seems to be the vacuum pump.

Actually, the question is for my X180. The capusule is seized and I was just thinking about overhauling it.

I am sure that I have seen a web site detailing a strip and overhaul but can't find it right now.

Perhaps I dreamt it :)

You have an ignition cut out switch located on top of your driver's side wheel arch. All Stevens have them. It cuts fuel on boost spikes.

The actuator I should be able to find a much cheaper and better one for you.

I thought my waste gate capsule was knacked. I got quotes around the figures already mentioned. The specialst breakers near by had them but wouldnt sell them without the rest of the engine. So, I removed the capsule, it was very corroded and looked a real mess from the outside. I could not see anyway to get into it to attempt a repair. Further more when I tried to move the actuator arm out of the capsule it appeared to be absolutley solid. I couldnt get it to move at all.

But i found that I could test to see if it was working correctly.

I had bought a 12v compressor tyre pump with pressure gauge so I used the rubber hose of the capsule to very carfully and slowly feed air pressure into the capsule. Sure enough when the pressure gauge began to read around 0.6 the actuator arm extended smoothly out of the capsule.

Please note, I did not seal the compressor output to the capsule. I simply held the capsule pipe apart from the compressor output and slowly closed them together being carful not to pump high pressure air directly into the capsule until I could regulate the pressure . This test isnt difficult to do and Im not recommending you try it just in case it goes wrong but its just what I did, just in case its of some use. :)
