Original Lotus Keyring

Is this being sold by one of our members?

I don't have an issue at all, but find it strange how it was bought in 1981 when that Logo didn't come out till 1984. Colin was actually still around then and would have instantly sacked anyone putting out something without the proper Lotus Logo.

As one of the most hated logo's for Lotus enthusiasts, and forced through by Mr Wickens, despite others protestations, it was only around for a year or 2 until certain Directors changed it and put the ACBC logo at the top of it.

Either way it is very collectable if anyone's interested.

My '87 HC has the black badge with that logo on the front of it. Haven't seen many others like it though...

ditto on my HC but the lettering is gold on a black background. I have also seen them with a green background again with the gold lettering

My 85 has the black with gold writing oval but has the ACBC at the top. I really like it...much better than the Norwich City Football Club bages they put on at the moment

The Green Oval Badge was green and Oval, not black and circular with the standard oval ACBC bit in the centre.

It was introduced by The new Chairman and head of BCA as he didn't want the Chapman association at the time. It was Oval, not round as past badges had been, it didn't include ACBC at all and the Lotus words were in a different font and interlinked. This was brought in in 1984, despite the protestaions of several Directors (MJK nearly quit because of it).

18 months later (give or take a while for stock to run out) MJK added in the ACBC part at the top of the badge. This again nearly ended MJK's career as it was done on his authority. The badge was still, however, BRG and oval. It wasn't until 2 years later (again give or take stocks running out) that they managed to change the Oval badge back to the badge we all know and love.

Do not be fooled by some of the Black badges. They are the same as the Yellow and Green ACBC badges that we all know and love. The Oval Black and Gold oval badge (like Buddsy's) was fitted because of the history and also not all colours of cars suited the Green.

Because the Oval badges were only produced over a few years, they are rarer and more collectable, I have seen the metal/enamel badge in perfect condition go for

That would tie in with the date of manufacture of your car.

Yeah I would imagine its 86 that would be the year where the odds may be as obviously 18 months puts it at the middle of 86 from 84. However there are two people that have 87 cars saying that their HC have the badge. I suppose they could of been manufactured in 86, also exactly how many of the things they had.

I wonder if any ended up on any of the really early Stevens cars?

I think that item on eBay was probably a dealer special, i seem to recall Norfolk Motor Company selling themselves on their location so close to the factory, so took certain matters into their own hands when branding came into it.

always preferred the round badge myself, never was a fan of the oval, looked out of proportion.

Nope, it's an original but it's an 84, not 81. That logo was designed in 84 by Wickens designers.

Yep, oval, not round and with the ACBC badge that makes it the latter one, 85ish to 87ish.
