No they are rubber ... i have a couple in the garage that i have not fitted yet if you want a pic of them let me know.

Cant remember what they cost but i dont remember saying "how much !!" so i think they were reasonable.

Those look more like the catches on an S2. The S2 has a removeable engine cover like the S1, but the difference is that it has a separate "inspection panel" built into it which lifts up without removing the whole cover. This panel is fastened by two of these catches.

Gordon (obviously) has it right. The rubber is the part that goes, and then people try to improvise a repair rather than spend the $12 for another one. On my blue S1, one of the straps was rebuilt using rubber from an inner tube folded over itself a couple of times! Sadly, many S1s in the States have short bungee cords instead . . .
