It would look so much better with the original bumpers :(

Is it possible to still buy the original bumpers?

Cheers,

Phil

Yes it's possible to still buy the original bumpers but the front ones you buy now are made of fiberglass not like the originals.

The car also is without wolfraces and has S2 side intakes

Wonder what the chassis is like

I think with a bit of time and money it could return to it's S1 glory

Some further detailing,

Engine number# CC7780114575

Unit# 780203440

Millage 97622

For me it is an option as I'm looking for an S1.

But as you already said, I would need a set of Wolfrace alloys

New bumper set and the "ears" removed.

And then for me the biggest challenge, as I'm living

in Amsterdam. The steering should be converted to the Left.

Now the first two modifications are easy.

Then the third should not couse to many problems,

if the side window is the same as the S1 window

than it would only be polyester work.

But the LHD conversion, I'd like to know if this is

possible (ofcourse it is), or better said

reasonably possible to do it in a correct way.

Any thoughts?

I was thinking to change the drive of my car some time ago but I can tell you that it's not a worth job.

The cost will be very expensive and you have to do a large ammount of work, anyway I report the full answer from Dave Massey (lotus engineering) regarding my RHD/LHD conversion question.

Maybe it helps.

..It is of course possible to convert the drive hand of any car, it is simply

a question of economics. The Esprit chassis is drive handed due to the

pedal box mountings on the chassis front crossmember. The chassis is

galvanised, and Lotus does not approve any welding or modification of the

chassis. You would therefore need to replace the chassis, or carry out

unapproved modifications. You would then need to consult a dealer who would

review the parts catalogue to identify and cost the relevent handed parts

you would require. There is no published list of this type. The cost and

availability of these parts would likely be prohibitive, and render the

excercise unrealistic. A far better proposition is to buy a car factory

built to the desired drive hand, especially as a converted car would almost

certainly be devalued when re-sold.

I am sorry if this reply is less positive than that for which you had hoped.

Yours sincerely,

"What on earth made someone do THAT to an S1. :) "

I couldn't agree more Mark ....

Also if you removed the side vents and re glassed them you would have you match that pearlecent paint ! and with the scrape above the number plate and all the stone chips you may as well paint the car it's original white :P

I hope someone buys it and restores it back to it's original splendor !

That's my plan. :P I have restored a couple of M100s but I have been after an S1 for the last year.

I had highest bid on the last S1 on Ebay, but it never reached the reserve or even got close to my maximum bid.

I understand the original wheels are really hard to get hold of, what do they go for when they are about?

I'm going to look at the car tonight.

Yes if you could send me a message with his details that would be great!

There are no bids at the moment so I guess they will be last minuite bids. I'll just put my maximum in, then wait and see. The last S1 didn't go over

I had a look at the car and took it for a test drive. A few of the dials don't work and I'm not sure about the mirror motors. The interior leather was not as dark as I had expected and the engine seems to lack power intermitantly with the pedal down. The owner said the carbs need re balancing to fix this. I should have checked the hand brake and under the car but was tired and forgot.

I really like the S1 Esprit and it sounds fantastic, so I have bid for it and will get the right wheels, bumpers etc, do a respray in white and fix all the problems over time. Fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Phil

Good luck with your bid.

There is a serious amount of work potentially to get this car right, but I like your determination!

The more that can be salvaged the better. I'm still curious to know just how many are left in the UK - other than what we know of on the register.

Hope you get it - and the wheels; it'll start looking right as soon as it finds as set of these.

Cheers,

Scott.

Just to let you all know that I managed to win the bid and can't wait to get the best Lotus car home.

I should now sell the Elise2 and one of my M100s to fund the Esprit back to it's former glory!

Thanks for the support! I keep grinning like an idiot

Excellent work phil. The loss of power intermittantly sounds like the worst of your problems, whilst the wheels and bumper are more decorative and I'm sure you can sort those. I saw some S1 parts at the factory recently so recommend you give them a call as I seem to remember that many of them were heavily discounted

Thanks for all your encouragement! I picked the car up last night and drove it home. Having read all the things about the Esprit I was expecting it to be a bit of a Dog to drive, but apart from the faulty gear linkage, it was an awesome car to drive. I also can't get over how good it looks and think this car is not often photographed well, so to see it on the road is a refreshing perspective and makes other cars look really poor.

I'll post a project report and some pics on a new thread and am looking forward to owning and driving this car.

Thanks for all the advice and help. :)

See you around,

Phil

Awesome to see another S1!!!! :D

Congratulations!

And you won't regret it -- they're addicting . . . :animier:

If you run out of luck looking for Wolfrace wheels, as a last resort I have a set of four in need of refurbishing, but I suspect shipping costs would be prohibitive.
