CEL P0116 p0135

I'm down at the beach now and have been driving and loving my Esprit. Temps are really high down here around 100 degrees F and sometimes even more. When I cranked the car this morning I got a CEL and it's been on all day. I pulled the codes at Advance Autoparts and they were 2 P0116 codes and a couple P0135 codes. The 116 is the coolant circuit and the 135 are 02 sensors?? Has anyone had any experience with these or seen these before? The car still cranks, idles, and drives like a dream, so maybe it's the heat getting to it. I need to drive home tomorrow which is about 4 hours from here. Should I unplug the battery and see if they come back on, or wait a little while and see if they clear up on there own?

From the manual P0135 is RH Bank pre Catalyst sensor, most likely it has failed as it's the heating element in the O2 sensor, noted in the manual if P0134 isn't on that is the likely issue.

P0116 is excessive time to warm up if the engine doesn't reach 40 deg C or greater within 320 seconds this code will trip. Hard to say what it is, I'd start with the sensors wiring, or perhaps the sensor itself.

Well I would take it to someone who can as a starting point. Ideally a Lotus service agent with a tech 1 scan tool or most places that specialise in auto diagnostics can test this easy enough. Sometimes its the sensors themselves that fail or signalling to something else. A process of elimination.

I would try switching the O2 sensors around first. Switch your left pre-cat O2 sensor with the right pre-cat O2 sensor. Reset the ECU and see. If the light comes back on the other side. Then you have a a bad O2 sensor. The other code might be related to the O2 sensor code so locate the O2 sensor issue first.

I'll have to do it once I'm home I suppose. The car only has 7200 or so miles on it so I can't imagine the 02 sensors would fail so soon. Usually they go later. I think it's most likely a signaling issue. I have to go back to Foreign Accents to get the passenger door seal replaced so I will have them look at it and figure it out I suppose. That probably will not be for another week or so though. The car drives exactly the same though, so at least that's good.

any 'freeze frame' data stored ?

not to my knowledge. I took it to advance auto parts and they said it was the first lotus they had seen. the scan tool was generic and the guy using it probably didn't know what to look for. he just scanned it and said "hey you've got these codes". I still think the codes are false alarms since the car does warm up over 40 deg C in fewer than 320 seconds, and it still drives as well as it did before. If an 02 sensor is messed up in other cars I've been around, driveability is severely hurt.

Gabe, I haven't had my Esprit a whole lot longer than you've had yours, so I'm certainly not an "authority" on the car, but let me add my two bits for what it's worth. I, too, had the CEL come on shortly after acquiring the vehicle (at just over 16,000 miles), and the Lotus mechanic said that the codes were for (surprise!) a RH bank O2 sensor (can't remember if it was "pre-cat" or "post-cat"----there are 4 total O2 sensors on the exhaust system, 1 pre and 1 post per side). I did not notice any difference in "driveabilty" when the problem surfaced, so it seems that the Lotus can suffer at least one O2 sensor failure and still drive normally. The dealership didn't seem overly concerned about my continuing to drive the car while awaiting the part. Once installed the CEL stayed out.

Bottom line: your code may, in fact, be "for real".

Good luck in clearing the light!

the problem that you guy have is as follows: in the US -versions all O2-sensors must work (as far as i know..) . We on the other side of the ocean can swap the 'post' and 'pre' cat one , and see what happens...

PS. all sensors are equal ! And an ordinary 4 wire (with preheater) version, so you can maybe fabricate an connector that does fit on an other o2-sensor from the open market.

Gabe, can you swap the o2-sensors in the suspected cylinder bank from front to rear side ? Than ask an more local service shop (with an OBD tool) if they can compare 'pre and post'-reading in both banks. So you can see that there really is an fault in one of the sensors. They should not need any special Lotus tool for reading those data. My ordinary Notebook device can read those O2 sensor information in the standart mode... .

You can also inspect in process of that work what the catalyst elements look like ( unsrew the silencer and look inside to the post catayst, than look [with an fibre-optical tool, that some garages/workshops have to lent] inside the post 02 sensor mounting point. You can see the pre catalyst element in that position. If any of the two elements per site is dismantled/ blocked by carbon, or dirt than the engine does also set some of the o2 sensor codes. As the function of the engine management together with the catalysts is not longer perfect. )

Ok so I cranked the car today and the CEL is magically gone. I was going to wait until I had to take it back to the shop to get the new window seal and have them swap the 02 sensors around, but I guess now no need. Any thoughts as to what happened? Faulty codes? Something in the hot beach air that set it off?

have you seen what condition the internals have ? It could be that some parts (ceramic dust) from the catalysts have temporally blocked the gabs in the sensor.

Welcome to OBDII

I'd guess that you will probably see the CEL again, so it is probably still worthwhile to have the shop take a quick look when you have it in next.

I was thinking that carbon build up could have been a possibility since I don't know how i twas driven before or how long ago it was last driven before it was delivered. Just anohter reason why I hate catalytic converters...that's why my STI doesnt have one anymore.

an catalytic converter isn't the problem -as long as it is resistant against vibration under running condition. That's why most of use have metal base catalysts and the original cats have done an "selfdesintegration" of their internal parts...

Welcome to OBDII :(

I'd have to agree with Russ on this one, Gabe. As previously mentioned I too had this same problem. The dealership told me that they had seen the CEL come on and then go out before I purchased the car (which was a good thing, as they replaced the relevant O2 sensor "gratis" when the light came on again after the sale). When the problem is intermittent, and the "fault" is undetected "after 3 engine starts" the light will go out (page 27 of the Owner's Manual). It will remain in "memory" for "40 engine warmups" and then be "erased" if still no longer detected.

While one can always hope the original problem has disappeared into the ether, be mentally prepared for a repeat.

Best of luck to you,

John
