Recommended Posts

Hi,

Checked todays TV guide, on Friday on channel 5 is a new series starting with Peter Snow called 'Brits Who Made The Modern World'. The first program is going to be on Team Lotus and how they changed formula one.

The program starts at 7.30pm Friday 20th June.

Worth recording this one I think.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

I noticed the advertised as a preview on C5 tonight, showing lots of Lotus clips.

can't get channel 5 :(.

You don't know how lucky you are.

IMO the programme seemed to be negative towards Lotus.

No photo's of Colin and some random guy with a moustache playing him leads me to think it was not produced with the blessing of Lotus (I could be wrong).

25 minutes of saying how they was unreliable and 'failed' to win, then the last 5 minutes covered the 1963 championship season and there was no mention at all of the success that Lotus had in F1 after then. :P

Well, it wasn't great for us afficienados...but IMO not a bad thing for the unknowing masses. Basically Jon Snow just eulogised Colin Chapman for inventing the monocoque chassis - nothing more. Given the limited scope of what he was working towards, 30 mins was plenty to put across the emergence of the Lotus F1 racing team through the Lotus 25, particularly in its second season. Obviously it ignored enormous amounts of the broader Lotus heretige but it did argue the case that Chapman and Lotus changed the face of Formula 1 and that all F1 teams are still following those early breakthroughs even today.

So good enough - it was a very positive msg.

Generally for 30 mins not bad, thought the fake moustache could have been better, looked like it was going to fall off for one minute  but that was just the beginning, there are so many other things they could have gone on to say that changed the sport, they didn't even mention about bolting the rear suspension on to the engine as well as the chassis development, unsure if that happened on the 25? The use of driveshafts as upper suspension arms, introducing sponsorship, the ground effect, twin chassis etc, etc.

LOL but he didn't !

It was just another idea that he pioneered when other people said it would't work - thats what chapman did best (imo).

If you're looking at the title of the program and how he/lotus changed F1 you need to look at the 49 and Cosworth, the 72 and imo the most infulential F1 car ever made which was the 79.

You could argue others such as the 91 (one of the 1st carbon fibre cars / active suspension) and the dual chassis car.

Of course the other thing chapman was very good at was getting the right driver in the right car.

Also didn't he have one of the biggest hands in the first sponsorship in F1 ? (gold leaf)

poor programme, weak production, CGI was pityful, actors were there for what reason? top gear could have done better in a ten minute slot and got loads more info across,

3 out of 10 channel five

An overly simplistic view of the period in F1 when the technical lead changed from Italy to England. Lots of stock film footage of 1960 GP's..hardly a Lotus to be seen (although I did spot the original front-engined F1 Lotus, unacknowledged in the commentary)..plenty of Coopers..one shot talking about the unreliability of Lotus showed a stranded BRM! No mention of the Lotus 18 campaigned to such great effect by Moss at Monaco..one would have thought that the 25 was Lotus' first attempt at F1. The true initiator of change in F1 was actually John Cooper, who started the modern mid-engined format by laying out some chalk lines on the floor of his Surbiton garage, bending tubes to suit, and welding them together to produce the first F1 mid-engined car. No mention of that at all. All this twaddle about the Lotus team being "amateurs in a shed" when, by the time of the Lotus 25, they were very proficient professionals who knew exactly what they were about. I'll never tire of looking at the 25, an unspeakably beautiful piece of design..but I agree with Jonathan, the later marks of Lotus were significantly more influential, especially the carbon car. Then again, what can you expect for 30 minutes on channel 5? At least they did find some of the active participants and interviewed them..what was lost in the editing and by the questions asked we'll never know.

As Jon said it was not just the 25 that lept forward but other models too most notablely for me the 49 and 72 (first modern F1 car side rads and all that). Ok for prime time but I cant help thinking Discovery Channel could have done a far better job over an hour.

Dammit!

Totally forgot and walked down the pub! watching telly on a friday evening is very rare

for me as i'm itching to get out, so i should have left myself a note. Will keep an eye out

for repeats as i'd like to see it, however good/bad it is.

probably worth buying one of those team lotus DVD's instead?

I thought the program was OK in the context of what it was trying to achieve although as Howard said, the CGI was truly pitiful. Clearly made on a tight budget with quite bit of it shot down at Goodwood.

At least they were focussing on Lotus at its finest as a GP winner which laid the foundations of British F1 dominamnce. Thankfully didn't get bogged down in the many, many accidents and fatalities which could have been laid at the door of ACBCs minimalist engineering approach.
