Nice work Mike :hrhr:

I got to say these pics are great and a steep learning curve to whats in the 918, well of course yours is a bit different :(

Can I ask you apart from the alloy parts pollished, did you coat the remaining parts with anything ? They do look very nice. Keep the pics coming. Ignore Gunter

You do realise having all those boys there going to be serious punch ups as to who gets the keys first when they get older. I would be real worried about Dads car going missing for the odd few hrs each time :)

Least you have your own pit crew which will be a bonus.

I'd like to know how that alignment tool actually works... is it in a certain position so that you align the tensioners to the edge of the alignment tool?

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

PS... I AM NOT A CERTIFIED MECHANIC.. I Have chosen to help those in need, in the past and must not be construed as being a certified technician.

I don't know who is looking forward the most to you firing this up, you or me!

Shall we move this to the 'project' section as an inspiration for others?

No probs :dizzy:

I've left a link to the thread in the V8 room so people can still find it.

(To be fair, the server now has CDP (Continuous Data Protection) so we should never lost anything more than the period between backups, 6 hours, as a worse case!)

Thanks for the kind comments Wayne.

Today was rather slow - being the weekend, but here is a short update.

Pressed new intermediate shaft oil seal into place and oil sleeve installed:

looking good, have you got shares in Hylomar ???

Technical question,

I have fitted up fuel lines to my engine which is still on a stand, and with the pump running there is 65psi, and when i turn the pump off it holds 55psi. (engine not running yet)

Shouldnt it show 55psi max at all times, or does this indicate the return pipe is too small, thus making more pressure ( its -6 like the supply pipe ? )

Thanks

Fantastic Mike and a great reference to all of us who can only dream of your space and facilities.

Can I ask- how do you achieve the mirror bright finish on all the alloy parts- are they tank dipped? And how would you anticipate keeping the engine looking like this once installed? It now rains in England eight days out of seven so whatever we do everything is always slightly damp even in a dry garage and so alloy always dulls in time- I have never found an effective way of stopping this.

Cheers B

Hi Bob,

The block is de-greased, wire-brushed and thoroughly cleaned before being sprayed with a high temperature paint. The cylinder heads are just wire-brushed and cleaned.

As you say, it is very difficult to try and keep engine looking pristine when used in Europe and the UK. There is no magic answer. The reason why I

Still waiting for Posty to deliver my Loctite 572, so I decided to test-install cambelts and check valve timing method.

Cambelts installed with crankshaft locked in position and camshaft positioning tools in place:

f_DSCF1014m_ef0a38e.jpg

f_DSCF1010m_24d65be.jpg

Tensioning of belts, for the purpose of checking valve timing. Final tensioning check will be performed with Mic and Tune! It.

f_DSCF1012m_ad179c6.jpg

Torqued cambelt pulleys removed positioning tools before turning crank and checking valves.

These are the inlet valves of cylinder 2 at 116deg ATDC (MOP):

Here are the corresponding exhaust valves at 104deg BTDC (MOP):

f_DSCF1015m_1f7a178.jpg

f_DSCF1016m_b0382bd.jpg

Crank rotated twice and smaller diameter camshaft tolerancing tools applied - screwed in without interference:

Job done ! :D

More updates tomorrow.

Cheers,

The more i see of the special tools lotus has... the more i like this engine... It's the only motor I've seen with such a wonderful setup. (I'm sure there are other motors out there.. but this is pretty damn fine)

Mike, i worked several years in practice -but never with belts like those. Is that an 'show & shine' blue-version to match all the other wonderful parts of your engine . :D

I bet no! those belts are covered... .

So what's the background of it ????
