Todays update.

As the sealant for the camshaft pulley bolts is still not here, I have been looking for other things to do.

I'm now a little depressed... i've realized from you're pictures... that there is no possible way to change the factory ducting to anything... a 2" silicone pipe will touch and so will a 2" cast pipe... hmmm, back to the drawing board.

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

PS... I AM NOT A CERTIFIED MECHANIC.. I Have chosen to help those in need, in the past and must not be construed as being a certified technician.

Hi Mark,

On my original charge-cooled engine, we replaced only the front part of the LH side, due to the angles and profiles that were required in the duct to clear the manifold and studs etc.

We also retained the same diameter as the standard ducting, as this is already matched to the size of the throttle body.

Hope you find a solution

Indeed Mike, a superb history. The text and in particular the images are outstanding.

Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us.

Best wishes.

Hi, Mike. I don't know why it took me so long to stumble upon this thread, but your pics show so much more detail than the service notes sketches. What a "find!" Thanks for taking the time to post your progress.

Today's "dummy" question: it doesn't appear that the camshaft sprockets (or idler/tensioner pulleys), or the intermediate shaft sprockets (which I assume are what drive the whole affair) possess any sort of flange(s) to retain/guide the cam belts. Other than the plastic front covers, what design feature keeps the belts "centered" as they whirl away?

Best of luck on the rest of the rebuild.

Continued with the fabrication of the feeds and returns. Here is some detail of one termination on the coolant feed:

Tape the braided hose and cut with fine bladed hacksaw:

Push the socket over the hose:

Push hose onto nipple to open ID of the Teflon lining:

Flare the braid in preparation for the olive:

f_DSCF0011m_44f3865.jpg

Fit the olive onto the hose inner:

Push hose onto connector, pull socket up and thread to specified range:

Measure length for the hose, repeat for the other termination and fit to engine....

I now have a great deal more respect for the folks who do this for a living - method is everything !

Cheers,

Mike S

Hey Mike ....

I'm a lurker, but I'm really enjoying this photo-documentary. Your quality is obvious, and the engine is looking great. And thanks for the talks with Mark about my V8 chargecooler set-up !

Keep up the good work.

Hi Mike;

I can't believe how every day I find myself drawn to this thread to check the progress of the photo documentary on the engine build. This page has clearly become a "how to" reference site. Keep the photos and information comming.

Someday when this project is done you'll have to tell the story behind "another female donkey"?

Can you take another measurement on your engine? I need to know the rise height of the casting between the turbo compressor outlet and the throttle body inlet. Top of the casting after the very tight 90 degree bend under the exhaust manifold (left side) to top of the casting at the T.B. inlet. I would think both sides would have the same rise height, but I am looking for the smallest distance. Just do the best you can with a sight line, it doesn't have to be super accurate. I am doing preliminary intercooler core selection and tubing routing. It is cardboard "mock up" time! There is no easy way.

Thanks again,

Wayne

Yesterday was completely written-off due to a necessary overhaul of our oil fired burner..... messy stuff, heating oil..... :)

Anyway, today Posty delivered my fancy new microphone so I have been able to tackle the cambelt tensioning at last.

Hahahahahaha

I forgot to mention that all crank positions are with reference to cylinder #2.

Also the microphone I used was a Beyerdynamic Opus 62
