Painting Little Aluminium Strips at bottom of Door Glass

Recommended Posts

The paint is coming off mine mostly showing bar metal but with some rust (i know aluminium doesnt rust but....)

Can these be repainted or bought ready painted? I was told that Aluminium is tough to paint and are on back order.

Are they easy to change?

To paint aluminum you need acid etch primer, you can get it in halfords.

Hi Danny,

The Lotus ones were never etched which is why the paint is coming in the first place. For a short term, use masking tape and mask off top and bottom then spray with satin black. Start off with light mist and leave to dry then build up. don't spray in one think coat as it'll chip off easier. See how long this lasts.

I did this when I first bought my V8 3 years ago and it's still like new.

Thanks

A gentle touch up in place sounds pretty easy.

It is interesting that the plates are obviouly aluminium as I can see lot of bare silver metals but just at the edge of the rubber on one I do have obvious rust bubbles. I suspect the rust is from the obviously cheap fittings (washers?) below.

It's zinc plated steel on my car, but has also bubbles and some chips of black paint are fallen off. It is now 10 years old, but i think the quality of the galvanic process wasn't the same as on the car frame...

Mmmm the plot thickens.

I was told they where aluminium by the garage which is why they didn't paint them but perhaps they were bullsh**ing me. They could be galvanised steel hence mostly clean bare metal with the odd bit of rust.

Makes them easier to paint.

Olaf, is it an ordinary Epoxy based Aluminum spray you are talking about ?? This type of paint/corrosion inhibitor is also available from others, as for example 'Weicon', 'Westfalia', and in most home-stores/hardware shops for DIY .

even did my sons wood plane with it.

its 99,5 % pure and works well. What I like is the new selection of paints they have, like that.
