Take it to your local pugot dealer and get a trade in valuation.

They will give you a professional, but very shit valuation, even take it down to them as they will knock you down even more..

For this situation you need the worst possible valuation you can get!

Hey guys n gals - anyone know where I can get a decent professional valuation for my 88 Esprit Turbo? I don't want to sell it, but have to give the ex half its value :-(

Some of the classic car magazines give really low values in their 'used classic prices' pages. Look there and show them, because glass's guide (or the guys on here) will put it much higher.

I don’t know about the legalities of this but something that crossed my mind was….. If you sell the car at a “reasonable” value to a “known 3rd party”, for say £4000 then your wife gets £2000. Once things settle down you could buy the car back at £4000 and the round trip costs you £2000… or less if you can get away with it.

Hell, “sell” it for a £10 if you can get away with it, that would wipe the smile off her face for taking away your pride and joy!

Probably not a situation to "fan the flames".

A specialist or club lotus, or trawl Pistonheads / ebay to find the selling (rather than asking) price of similar

Well, the book guides have dropped substantaill for the last 3 months, on all cars across the board.

Wait till the new book is published, we have an online version and I can assure you everything has dropped again. Like the guys said, get a sale value off E-bay (they are normally well below trade), then webuyanycar to back it up. Maybe even find a local dealer, or contact Guy at Strattons and explain it to him. I'm sure he'll do you a written quote to back up the other 2.

I have done this before and you need to get at least 2-3 quotes to back up your claim. The Solicitor will then believe them and not bother doing his own. If you just get one he'll look into it more.

In relation to selling the car cheap, it depends on whether it goes through the court. No matter what you sell it for they will take a "Average" cost of the vehicle and award it to your ex-wife.

If it's amicable sell it to someone you trust for a fugure you know she'll complain about but won't take the case to court for. If you sell it at £1 and she gets 50p then she may take it further. If, however, you sell it for £6000 (and it's worth £10,000) then she'll prob complain but take the £3k. Then buy it back. Ensure the money changes hands though and isn't done on paper, else you can get done if she then takes it to court.

Go look at Lotus prices in Glasses over the past 3 months. They've all risen.

Don't use Glasses. We only use CAP because it's more realistic. Glasses is set by the trade so tends to reflect what the trade want at the time. Glasses is set mainly by Auction prices and therefore reflects whats really happening in the used car industry.

We monitor all cars on a monthly basis and do comparisons as part of the management of our risk fleet. Heres some great examples for you retail punters, (each figure is a previous month with the final one being the new book for July):

207 S 1.4 vti 95 5dr a/c

8050 7800 7550

Yaris T2 5dr

7100 6800 6400

Golf 1.6TDi 105 SE 5dr

15050 14150 13900

Accord 2.2 DTEC ES 4dr

16750 16550 16350

Saying that, like Bibs says there are a few (well, very few) exceptions to the rule namely Honda Jazz and Civic diesels, reason for this is the lack of Diesel engine supply new (If you order a Honda Diesel now the lead time is November/december delivery)is pushing up demand for used Honda's. It does suprise me to hear that Lotus have gone up in the book again as luxury cars and sports cars (non essential travel) have been especially hard hit.

By the way, prices per month reflect the age of said vehicle, so we are always comparing a 6 month old vehicle in May with a 6 month old vehicle in June, July etc.

Thanks for all the advice guys. In the end I got a valuation from Club Lotus - cost me £20 as a non-member (£10 to members), very professional, fitted my needs exactly and was done for me over a weekend via email and scanned copies of docs and photos. Can't recommend them enough, and Alan Morgan who did the valuation was extremely helpful. If you need a valuation, that's the place to go. www.clublotus.co.uk
