Can it be?

Recommended Posts

Turbo side top of shock has what looks like well there isn't one on the other side, so could this be a heat shield, but no it's plastic, sits on top of the shock mounting, couldn't be, so is it just to look pretty and the other side is just missing?

I was replacing my engine hosing and noticed the exact same thing. The turbo side has a fiberglass cap on the shock and the other side doesn't. My cap was seriously deteriorated and a PO used sheet metal screws to attach it..... Must be a heat shield to keep the shock fluid cool. I'll probably fabricate an aluminum one to replace it.

Being directly under the catalytic converter there are some extreme temperatures being radiated, especially when stopped, that cook the top of the shock. I make a stainless cap as my original f/glass one was also disintegrating.

Been here before, the old Elan used to melt the rubber in the n/s engine mount and the rubbers in the clutch cylinder until I made heat shields, but if this one has been there for 20 years I think I'll just paint it!
