Starter Motor Not Working

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My starter motor started to play up, requiring the odd tape on the solenoid to get it going, then it got to the point that it wouldn't actually start at all without tapping it, something you don't want to do in a hurry if you stall the car in traffic. So I took it off the other night after work, boot floor out in ten minutes and the starter off just after tea. I finished the whole job at 11.30pm, but I did do some extra work while I had the motor off, also I painted the case, pointless, but it does look like I've actually worked on it now even if it was a quick job.

The contacts inside the solenoid were very black and pitted, so I cleaned them all up and also lubricated the bendix so she fires up like a dream now. Here are some pictures of the repair. Don't know how long it will last, but it has saved me some serious money (

I actually prefer these types instead of the compact all in one. Might be heavier but it is easier to service and leaks less water.

What I was tempted to do on mine was to put a bit of PVC drain over the solenoid to deflect the rain / water ingress. Cut the pipe dow the middle and slide it over the end.

I'm sure you could get new contacts brazed onto the old ones if push came to shove.
