Filler cap conundrum

Recommended Posts

My S1 can with 1 locking filler cap only, but I wanted two non locking types, so at Donington I brought two used filler caps from lotus bits and tried them on Martin fokes very eary S1 and they fitted fine so I have them painted with the body shell. I went to fit them to my car and they don't fit !

As the picture shows I need to change the latching part of the cap or the filler neck is there a non locking cap that fits my filler neck ?

Any idears what I should have fitted on an S1 ?

The cap you are holding in your hand is correct, down to the chain. The fuel filler neck on your car is the part that doesn't belong. Also, originally there was a large rubber grommet/ring around the neck, not the metal ring with screws.

Disregard the internal portion of the filler neck; in the States they (and all cars) are made to accept a smaller nozzle so that only unleaded fuel can be put in (leaded pumps had a larger, "normal" sized nozzle).

The filler neck looks like the ones on the later models and on the Excel.

Rover or Opel (Vauxhall) Corsa should fit.

So I have S3 filler necks fitted on my car ?

If so is there a flush fitting cap that will fit like on the S1 and S2 ?

This is turning out to be a bit of a bugger

As the ones on the S3 are lockable, I think you have to use the shell of your existing cap and the internals from a new cap. Probably you need to do some grinding down around the area where the lock mechanisms sits.

I have to correct my comment above, not the Opel Corsa one is the right one, but the cap from a Volkswagen Scirocco should fit. I mixed it up with the Elise...
