85 mph speedometer - Interior/Exterior/Lights/Glass/Alarms/ICE/HVAC - The Lotus Forums Jump to content

This is the one thing that kills me about my S2...the speedometer only goes to 85!

Picture057.jpg

The speed limit in the US was 55 at the time, but come on! The S2 can go over 120, shoudn't it have a higher speedo?

It always gives me a start on the freeway when I see the dial pegged way over, and I'm afraid I'll hit the end/break it.

So...were all S2s like this or is it a Federal, or even California spec?

And what happens if I hit the end, will the needle just hold, will it freeze up, will oil go gushing out everywhere?

It was federal law in 1980 for all cars to have 85mph speedometer. I think it went into '81, too.

My 1980 308 has it, too. :(

I would not expect any issues if you peg the gauge; I'm sure it's been done by many a 1980 Federal Lotus owner!
