6 speed into a V8 esprit from another car?

Recommended Posts

I talked to an acquaintance a while ago who told me that his buddy's esprit had a 6 speed from a porsche inserted after his car had quite a bit of performance mods. I have never heard before or since of any alternate vehicle's transmission being a direct or even slightly modified fit for the V8 esprit. He had no idea what model porsche it was though, anyone have any perspective? Is it possible this guy is just full of it? I'm sure if this were true, there would be several junk yards out there who would be able to provide a relatively cost effective replacement tranny for the beloved esprit, I certainly wish that were the case!

Hi Matt,

It is possible to fit a Porsche/Getrag G50 transmission in the Esprit, albeit inverted. You

Not cheap !.... :)

A decent G50/50 could cost upwards of 5K - driveshafts could be another 1K - clutch?..... and the rest depends on how handy you are with doing some of the machining/mechanicals yourself.....

Hilly could probably do it with change fom a fiver :) , but mere mortals would probably need some specialist services.

The good thing about the G50 is that there are lots of resources available and many existing gear ratios to choose from.

What is the main reason for wanting to go this way?

Cheers,

Mike S

PUK or Ramspott & Brandt do a six speed dog box that fits into the Renault UN1-27 housings with no mods. Its equally expensive but a relatively straight forward mod. I will be going down this road when I have recovered from the expense of the Historic Monaco and the Classic Le Mans. I will let all know how difficult it is to build the box and the practicality for road use (both with respect to changing gear and noise level).

To my knowledge the R&B 6-speed is in fact the GTO designed 6-speed...... ask

as far as i remember , one 6 speed is fitted in one of the cars in the "Lotus-Club-Deutschland" members list... . So ask Steffen&Olaf, maybe he can arrange an contact to the driver and he can answer how it feels !

What i like in the G50 Club-racer arrangement is: that the turbos are not positioned in the wet dirt of the wheels, and the starter is not under the plenum.

was there an charge cooler fitted in the car ?

If budget allows, the Graziano 6 speed would be the ideal option. It's basically the Enzo transmission in a different casing, and in manual configuration. It is being used by a number of new supercar projects that are currently in development. I've driven a car with this and it's fantastic, really clean precise changes. However Graziano would probably only supply the transmission to a suitable engineering company and not directly to individuals.

Thanks for the info guys. this is what makes the forum worth while. I will accumulate as much info as I can before anything is undertaken. I have already aquired a spare UN1-27 box so I am on the way to a new project. any more info wouldbe apreciated.

Now the tax man watns paying as well as the holiday debts.

The best thing is I have a most understanding wife who also likes the social side of LEW & forum. roll on the 60th.

Trying to purchase Gordonie's Mellow Yellow and the Trans hasn't been touched yet, worried it might not hold up to the extra power, trying to plan for the future.

Not quite the same as mine isn't a Lotus V8, but I have got a 6 speed Audi gearbox running in mine.........

Hilly

I know you used a FWD Audi TD gearbox which should handle more torque that the petrol equivalent. But how does it stand up to the torque from the 4.2 petrol which normally used a 4WD box? Also, do you have a transmission oil cooler since the box would be revving higher?

May: DON'T hit it with a hammer!

Clarkson: Why?

May: Cause it's the tool of a pikey.

The 01X gearbox i have used it fitted to both petrol and diesel cars so it will be more than happy to cope with the revs from the V8

Getrag quote 400 Nm (300ft/lb) for the 01X which is about what the ABZ engine I am using kicks out so in theory is shouldn't go bang.

To help with that the Esprit is a good 400Kg lighter than the A4 it was fitted in and I have only got 255 tyres on the rear so I am not worried about the gearbox holding up.

I have yet to track the car so haven't put a cooler on the gearbox yet, when I do I'll monitor the oil to see if it is required.

I have done 2K miles on it now and the box it going great, the change is better than the Citroen box ever was and having driven a Renault gearboxed car it is in a different league altogether!
