N/A or Turbo

lottylotus

Recommended Posts

Sold my 3rd S1 a few months ago, considering an SE N/A or Turbo. Any body has this trouble deciding before (I really like the N/A Rear Tailgate better than the Turbo)

What do you lads think?

Err... Im not entirely sure what you're asking... For that matter - I'm not completely sure you do either?

An SE ... or an NA ... or a Turbo?

Or... an SE or an NA?

Or... a Turbo or an NA?

There is no Naturally Aspirated SE - thats the whole point of the SE - the Chargecooler on the back end of the turbo!

The power difference between the SE and the Turbo is about as dramatic as the power difference between the Turbo and the SE...

It all comes down to what do YOU want from your car?

Do you want a turbo charged driving experience? (Non-linear power delivery) or do you want the more straight NA?

Do you want the extra power of a Turbo (or an SE)? or the slightly more predictable handling of an NA?

OR are you more concerned with how she looks - in which case get the one with the tailgate you like the look of better...

*OR* get the Turbo and put an NA tailgate on it! :o

No one here can answer your question for you - you need to know what criteria are important for you in your car choice - if you tell us those, then we may be able to help advise you which model may be likely fit them best?

Cheers,

Robin

[going slightly off topic now]

Robin: Am I right in thinking that a supercharged driving experience has linear power delivery (but at fractionally diminshed performance compared to a turbo of the same literage and spec?).

RE Lotty:

Go for an SE! They're the best!

PS: Are you a bloke or a girl? Your name is Nigel yet you refer to us as the lads? And your username is Lotty - which is normally short for Charlotte? You should meet Toua - we have a lot of hermaphrodites on here.... :o

The turbo is a lot of fun but they're just *different* :o

Errr.. I *think* Superchargers ought to be non-linear also - their output / compression capability rises with the revs surely? It is just lag free.... - doesn't need to 'spin up' as it's permanently connected to the motor...

Someone authoritative answer this please!! :o

As for the AMOUNT of power - errm well thath depends on the SIZE of turbo / supercharger :P

Can a size for size comaprison be made between the two? I suppose you can compare the compressor size? I would imagine they'd be the same though? They do exactly the same thing on the output / business end of things but are simply driven differently? Or can Turbos spin faster?

Turbos do spin faster, you gat lag but much more top end power.

Superchargers do have no lag but run out of air far sooner than turbos.

Thats why you need a supercharged turbocharged engine. It just makes much more sense. Been done before. :o

That's not far off what they do on a lot of modern cars with Twin Turbos... (E.g. V70R)

Small, quick snail shells to get you going and then great big huge gas turbines for the top end! :o

Shows how much i know about esprits eh, iwas looking at a turbo hc 1989 on e bay but the car has no glass section across the tailgate ( i thought the turbo had the glass across the tailgate) as for the SE i did realise these where turbos it was the fact that should i shell out for an SE or go for a cheaper n/a model 1987 or 1988 or turbo 1987 89

I WAS JUST AFTER POSITIVES NOT NEGATIVES

Errr well between a Stevens Turbo and an SE there's no contest really. It has to be the SE. Theyre both turbo charged but one has a LOT more power - and that's the point of a turbo car!

However, they're VERY different beasts to NA cars.

If the only thing that makes your decision is the tailgate then the power difference is neither here nor there anyway!

the tranny will last longer on a nonturbo system. i can't say i take full advantage of the turbo. and fuel savings will be dramatic without a turbo.

I used to have a 1989 Esprit Turbo, you know the 220 bhp job.

I didn't have it for too long though. It had to go when I realised that my Volvo 740 Turbo was a lot quicker.

Go for maximum power output.

Err if your Volvo was faster then 1) Your Esprit was fecked or 2) You werent driving it properly :)

I've driven a V70R and it's quick but not as quick as my Esprit
