ooouutsch! that blue spot looks like serious 'dry run & overheat' on the shell... .

Have you mentioned an rework on the crank, as it is possible to add material on a crank to reshape it in standard dimensions ! Think you know that way, do you !?

erm....ok....I have no idea why or what I'm looking at and why are you speaking in some alien language.

Nice shiney parts though...and look, some have patterns on them! Pretty!

Tony, we speak about some metal added by welding. That is an way to save crankshafts on historical cars ...and prevent them from going scraped !

I've got the usual welding courses in my time of job-education for the official German certificate as mechanic, and even in the university i can see that there is whole world of fascinating machinery nowadays. Think it will be worth it to contact some of these companies in France. Especially as you can regulate the hardening effects and deepness for the surface very well... .

Thanks for the repair tips. If this was the last available crank, then more effort might go into repair - but I have numerous cranks with less or no damage. For now, this one will go into the damage stockpile.

A little progress today.

Tackled the job of cleaning the block and liners.

Block cleaned up nicely after a huge amount of ´stuff´ removed from the coolant passages.

f_grq4v3v0m_155c5c3.jpg

The liners were similiarly caked with crap, but also came up with fairly minimal pitting

f_grq4v3v6m_4730aca.jpg

f_grq4v3vym_2298f44.jpg

Stand-in is spot-on, but the liners will now be send away for honing to suit the JE pistons, as clearance is on the tight side.

Once the liners come back, ring gapping will commence :(

Cheers,

Mike S

Mike,

I hope you can turn this engine in a reliable master piece, and we have confidence in you, that you really can.

Don't fix the engine too fast, because I'm off for a holiday until the 17th of November, so until then I can not come by with Walter to pick it up :):gathering:

But on the other hand, it would be better if the engine was already into the back of Walter's Esprit, when I come back home. As Walter really urgently needs to regain his confidence in the reliability of the Esprit and regain that grin on his face, if he revs his Esprit. :)

So keep up the good work!

Don´t worry Gert - I´ll not hurry the build.

The crank can go in next weekend and then we will be waiting for the liners and pistons to come back from Gosnay´s before gapping up the rings. Once the bottom-end and the heads are on, it will come together very quickly.

If you get a chance, please give Walter a nudge regarding the desired timing adjustments :gathering:

Cheers,

Mike S

The intention had been to install a replacement standard crankshaft, but after measuring I found that although the mains were all standard, one of the crankpins (BE 1/5) had already been re-worked to 0.25us.

Hi Walter,

Hope that you are feeling better

The replacememt crank should be here on Monday now and the liners are expected back any day.

Piston/liner bore clearance will be 4 thou for the JE forged pistons, so I can look forward to the ring gapping next week. The ACL BE bearings are also in work, so will be interesting to see how they fit.

Once we are past ring gapping, the build can really get moving. I

The replacement standard size crank arrived today, so that went in after cleaning and measuring.

Unfortunately, still waiting for parts to arrive, so looking for other odd jobs that need doing.

Finished off fitting conrods to the first half set of JEs. Pistons have thermal crown and anti-friction skirt coatings.
