The donkeys are happy, so I was able to get back into the workshop.

The engine took a giant leap forward these last two days.

The liners and upgraded material ACL BE bearings came back from Gosnay

hi guys

looks to me like a piston had cracked an finally given up -hence the white smoke on the run.

this created the other collateral damage in conrod hitting the bore .

did anyone check the cam belt before stripping ?

anyways ,looks like a new block to me.

sorry for your untimely loss.

Hi Richard,

This is a complete replacement rebuilt engine, based on a warranty return from Lotus USA.

Walters original damaged engine is in bits, but yet to be fully checked. There is a fair amount of internal damage. Hopefully the block can be salvaged, but the crank looks buggered, as there are chunks out of the counterweight :)

Cheers,

Mike S

Mmmh, seeing all the metal, screws, pistons, etc. makes us jealous! :D

Do you plan to rebuilt the S350 engine as well? Did the company answer you regarding the big hol ein the block of the blue engine? If not, we could swap the cam cover - the blue one (?) with my red one, when I change the locking plates... (if possible?!).

On advice from the Lotus technical, I decided against a repair of that block at present.

It would require at least a re-confirmation of the line-boring for the crank. If, in future, blocks become extremely rare then I may try harder to reclaim it.

The blue cam covers and plenum are already allocated to another engine, sorry.

You could always get someone to paint them. Günter has a nice shade of red you could use... :D

Cheers,

Mike S

The final stretch.

Having decided on standard timing values, the tappets and cams are fitted and the engine timed-up.

Thanks Bibs. :)

I hope that Walter will be happy when he comes to collect the engine.

There should be a great celebration when he finally gets the engine back in his car and takes the first drive in over 12 months.

Cheers,

Can you both please stop arguing!!! :wallbash:

I found a cover on the net for 210 EUR + shipping, and I´m thinking about buying it at a later time. It is of course an option to make them with carbon or fibre glass or whatever. Maybe I´ll do it myself, if I find a good offer for a DIY-set.

That´s all about this on the :)...

Update on the flywheel front.

After having the flywheel looked at by some specialists, Lotus appear to have done a damn good job of keeping the mass down in the first place. There is very little that can be taken off without risking strength, so for Walter
