Burning smell, white smoke, need help.

Recommended Posts

EDIT 11/04/05: I got under the car and took a closer tonight, what I first though was coolant *appears* to be oil, atleast it certainly feels like and looks like oil. I took several pictures:

First Image:

Here is the manifold from underneath the car:

Second Image:

Same as first little closer view

Third Image:

This is where the majority of the oil has run down

Fourth Image:

View from above the engine (by the turbo and spark plugs), the oil seems to be dripping from between that shield and the block

Fifth Image:

Gives you an idea of where I am zoomed in (in the fourth pic) at above the engine

Sixth Image:

Another pic of the exhaust manifold, except taken from an angle behind it

Any ideas of where this leak is coming from? Sunday I will take off the shield and poke around behind it. Hopefully these pics will help out alot!

Thanks!

Hey guys,

First i'll give a little background to what I believe was the start of this problem (or atleast the first time I noticed it). About a month ago I changed my oil & filter. Upon startup I noticed a white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. I also noticed alot of moisture pooling up at the end of the pipe. I revved the engine and the smoke seemed to stop momentarily and it blew the moisture all over the ground. I have noticed the same symptoms upon startup everytime since then.

Tonight:

I went into the garage and started the engine to let it warm up. While filling up one of my tires to the right pressue I noticed a burning smell similar to that of burning rubber. I opened the hatch and you could see whitish smoke swirling up. The smoke was coming from the exhaust manifold next to the turbo. I can see wetness on the manifold, and there is quite a bit from underneath. I went ahead and took some pictures that I will post here in a minute. Anyone have any ideas where this leak could be coming from? Im pretty positive that it is coolant that is leaking and burning at this point. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

EDIT: Upon searching around it seems possible that it could be the head gasket. The white smoke does seem to look almost like steam. Can I replace the head gasket w/ the engine in the car or will it need to be pulled? What does a head gasket run?

Condensation in the exhaust upon start up is normal, but the white smoke does sound like you have coolant entering the exaust. I'd start by having the cooling system checked for pressure loss and look for bubbles / contamination in the coolant. Check your dipstick for light brown slime; this would indicated coolant leaking around the base of the liners.

A head gasket is around $100.00, but it's a big job. On the Giugiaro cars one can remove the head with the exhaust manifold in place by loosening the gearbox and motor mounts and jacking the motor up on the left side. On the Stevens cars some say the manifold must be removed to get the head off. I'd try lifting the motor before pulling the manifold.

Try to find out where the coolant is coming from, possibly the turbo center section is leaking water into the exhaust. Pulling the turbo for repair would be a lot easier than pulling the head.

Am not saying it's this, and if it is then it's unreleated to the smoke out of the

pipe itself, but here's one that gets mentioned often as it seems pretty common:

Hi Erik,

Your oil leak looks more like the infamous cam-tower and/or cam-cover leak. This actually is not a big problem besides from beeing "ugly" and maybe you get some burning-oil-smoke from time to time rising up from the exhaust header. But this problem usually has nothing to do with clouds and/or white steam comimg out of the exhaust-pipe !

I feel you have two different issues:

One is the cam-tower and/or cam-cover leaking and the other problem maybe is:

- blown head gasket

OR

- turbo bearing failure

Cheers

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The white smoke is mainly at startup and does seem to go away after the car has warmed up. I will definately double check it this weekend, but it appears that after I have driven around it doesn't smoke anymore. The smoking is actually pretty light, nothing very heavy. I will pull off that shield this weekend and take some pictures ;) . I really appreciate the help :)!
