V8 stalls when cold

Hi all

I noticed for the first time yesterday that my V8 stalled after running for about ten seconds when first starting it yesterday morning. No warning lights or anything, just died!

It did this once more before holding the throttle down a slight way which cured it.

Once up to temp the problem went.... until again this morning when it did it 6 times before finally sorting itself.

Anyone know what it's playing at?

Cheers!

I had the same problem with my 2000. Dave Simkin of LCU passed me an idle "re-learn" proccedure:

Turn off all accesories, key on only no start, throttle to floor 3 times slowly within 20 seconds, leave key on. after a minute listen for "clunk" of the idle air control valve reseting to home. Start engine let idle for 3 fan cycles, then turn on AC go through 3 more fan cycles. This solved my problem!

Since the IAC valve provides no position feedback, it think the ECU looses track of it's home position now and then.

Thanks, I'll try this today.

Hmmm I know mine used to be a bit lumpy on tickover but it never stalled.

Failing the above, have you tried an ECU reset ? Disconnect the battery for a few mins and re-connect (headlights might pop up) start the car and switch the air-con on if you have it.

Prob with the aircon is when it's not called for the clutch dis-engages it from the engine, when it is called there is extra load on it, I have heard little tales that if you haven't factored for this load in the ECU learn stages (ie 15mins after a battery disconnect / reset) the car neglects to adjust for it and when you call the air-con it can stall or splutter the engine.

How does it hot start ?

If fine it might be a problem with a sensor on air temperature...figures as it is getting colder. I also had a leaf stuck in one of my 'ears' once (air-clearnienr intakes grilles next to the fuel filler caps) which didn't help matters !

Hows that for pure speculation and guesswork !? ;)

LOL..... Very cool!

Thanks to both of you for the help threads.

Once car is running for a minute, it won't stall, it only stalls within the first thirty seconds on cold, but has done it until yesterday upto 6 times. Warm, hot or even once cool but in the same day then starts no probs

OK... Here's the latest.

Went out yesterday and fired the car.... car died within seconds, about 20 to be accurate.

Tried the IAC re-learn

ignition on, three full dips of the throttle within 20 seconds, waited a minute and fired up. Car didn't stall. I never actually heard a clunk but it was p!ssing down and I was in the cabin so perhaps I wouldn't have heard it?

I never got to do the full 6 cycles (3 fans normal, 3 fans with aircon) as Sam and I had to be somewhere, so I may have to do it all again, but considering it stalled 6 times the day before and nil having done this procedure, then perhaps that's it?

I'm gonna start it tonight (after 5th Gear) and see. If need to i'll do the full IAC proc, then reset the ECU if needed, then cry and get the warranty paperwork out and get someone to deal with it B)
