Performance Car photoshoot

Recommended Posts

As you may have gathered from the Bibs - Car wanted thread I went to do a photoshoot for Performance car magazine today.

Well - the article is due to run over 21 pages and is called mid-engined masterpieces.

So I headed off in the dark this morning to the rendezvous point in North Wales aiming to be there around 9am. I was more or less on schedule until about a mile from the place when I was confronted by around 5cm of snow over the road. I gingerly proceeded to said place to find no-one there!

A quick call with the organisers and an alternative rendezvous in Llangollen was arranged.

Good job really! driving on snow in a torquey V8 is not the best experience to have in a Lotus!! Fortunately the roads were quiet and wide so as I went down a road at 45 degrees I was glad nothing was coming the other way!!

Pah I say to all those who lay their cars up for winter - there is nothing like a bit of Ice/snow driving in an Esprit!! (the guy following me in a 4 wheel drive Peugeot 205 T16 said it was quite something watching me!)

Anyway I digress - after the rendezvous we headed off to the horseshoe pass and met up on the car park of the cafe at the top (very helpful owners there - came out and had photos taken on the cars!).

This was the view from the car park:

So the Esprit was in some fine company:

And of course the best car there!!

There was also the following (but I didn't get any photos of them

Ariel Atom

Renault Spider

Toyota MR2

Peugeot 205 T16

All in all a good day with excellent weather (bright sunlight all day) and spectacular scenery.

The magazine should be in the shops in January.

The best bit was that they drove it up from Kent the previous day at 4am!

When it arrived at the car park the inside was full of ice and snow. The driver got out and his trousers were soaking wet (fortunately they were waterproof!)

The Renault spider was nearly as bad!

Respect due mate. After my pirouets on black ice earlier this year (writing my previous V8-GT off) I would have probably done a U-Turn and slunk back off home! Well done - thats something to look forward to in the New Year.

It must have been those speed rated, super sticky, deep tread DOT race snow tires you had on the car that got you through safely.

Well done.

Braver man than me Dave ........... I think I'd have cried off!

My photo shoot tomorrow (Classic & Sportscar magazine) is near to Silverstone so hopefully no trouble with snow/ice etc

Hi Dave,

How is the Esprit traction on snow? How did the other cars manage or have they been trailered?

Jimmy

Traction was practically zero. The main problem was that due to the torque of the V8 it was very difficult to apply any power without the wheels spinning which on snow/ice is not good.

At one point I was coasting along in 1st with no throttle applied at all just the engine ticking over and even then it was sliding at times.

Also braking was a problem - especially with the AP racing brakes. The ABS was cutting in almost immediately and trying to stop in a straight line was impossible.

Fortunately for me the roads were deserted and fairly wide.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone really - very careful driving was necessary to keep it from disaster.

I was only on the snow for about 2 miles then it disappeared.

The car park shown was snow covered but the road was a main road so was gritted and very clear.

All the other cars were also driven to the shoot. We had to push the donkey and the Renault to get them off the car park.

Also the Atom had road legal slicks on and was the top spec (supercharged 0-60 in 2.9s) version so it was a nightmare to keep straight.

The Audi R8 had problems at times but it was 4 wheel drive (although heavily biased to the rear).

Magazine is due out on Thursday (15th)

I have received my copies and I can say that it was well worth it! The photos are amazing - a full page photo of the 350 :w00t:

The write up is also complimentary and credit is also given to the forum.

All in all a good job.

I also got a CD with the photos on (and some that weren't in the magazine).

It's out tomorrow unless you're a subscriber and they've sent it early. Subscriber editions do vary so perhaps they missed it out but I can't see it if it's such a big feature.
