I guess I'm sad to see GM's collapse, having grown up in the late 70s and early 80s loving those big American cars. They were much more interesting than the European cars like the Maxi's / Chevettes / Cavaliers etc.

But in reality GM stopped producing cool cars 30 years ago. Instead they went down the path of trying to compete with the European and Japanese markets by producing crappy little economy boxes with Pontiac badges. I'll just have to rememeber how they used to be:

Things are getting worse.

This from the authoritive automotive news site "Sniff Petrol":

There was bad news for the motor industry this week as a leading car-based maths expert revealed that cars sales will have fallen by a record 107 percent before the end of the year. The staggering new discovery comes from Professor Ken Freeply of Nigel Havers College, Kettering, who has been based his findings on some hysterical headlines he read in a newspaper.

I would like to refer to my previous comments that no one is worse off than the prestige car makers. Here's the official line from Institute of Motor Indutry:

....whilst some car makers like Lotus have weathered the storm up till now a 70% drop (Nov compared to 2007) they are in no way the worst. Rolls Royce announced their sales in November.....Zero! Nil! Nothing. Not a single sale. Bentley were not far off and with the likes of the Range Rover rapidly falling by the wayside we have to wonder how long before production is moved to places like India and China and sold into those markets not strangled by regulation and Green hypocracy.

FYI though Lotus sold a low number of cars, they still have Engineering that is performing very well.

As for GM....sell your Vauxhalls now whilst they are still worth a few pennies, They have just offered staff 9 months off at 30% pay...9 Months!!!!

SMMt are UK based figures only.

Paul is correct in what he says above (now I've had time to read everything properly). Making uninspiring cars with no charisma has been a trade mark of the big 3 for some time now. Make em crap discount em 50% is not a good business model and lets not forget here that GM have been losing billions for 5 years now, whilst Ford have been losing slightly more but only for 3 years.

So if that model doesn't work which one does?

Well IMHO the only model semi-working right now is the Quality branding. Not Premium or Prestige. By quality I mean reasonable price, reasonable discount, reasonable depreciation. Likes of BMW, Audi are really suffering as their price it high give no or little discount just doesn't cut the mustard in times of recession.

So brands like Toyota, Honda, VW, Nissan and some of the French brands seem the best.

But lets not beat around the bush, we could see 50% of brands disappear if the market stays like this.

I agree Kimbers! That's why I'm glad to be where I am.. If I was working for a GM dealership now... I'm sure I'd be quitting and going to work for toyota, VW, Honda... etc...

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

Who are the Big 3 ?

I wouldn't say Ford are making bad cars by a million miles !

The orignal Focus was a nigh on a revolution, the Puma was a great car - Focus RS is incredible....I fought tooth and nail to try and keep them from taking our Mondeo Estate (still rate that car as one of the best Estates I've driven). My old Man's KA is nigh on faultless and one of the funnest cars to drive I have ever sat in.

The new batch of Focus' and Mondeos we have are great cars, not only do they look good but the interior build is excellent and their ride & handling is better than what you'd want it to be - oh and 180,000 miles plus of being thrashed from the turn of the key and they're still running fine, our cars get a kicking, all the Mercs Saabs VWs etc are always in the shop - it's the Vauxhalls and FOrds that never seem to go wrong.

North American Fords are not anywhere as good as their European cousins. The Escort here was crap, the Contour ( Mondeo) was a little better but stupid things used to go wrong, as for the bigger models, the 500, Taurus, Explorer, and such, they are poor. I had a Fiesta here back in the 80s, 1600cc engine made in UK. The thing was great, just the body couldn't stand the salt and the long winters. I wish there were more of the small diesel engined cars here, I'm suprised Ford have not had some on the road here.

Whilst it's true that Ford are better here than in the States, IMHO they are still not up to standard. Ask Simon f, who owned one, or my brother who took a 3 month old one back with a horrible rattle in the dash only to be told "What do you expect? It's a Ford!" by the dealer.

They may be nice when new but if you worked in the industry like Mark and I do you'd understand. If it's from one of the big 3 you can guarantee, absolutely guarantee 2 things.

1. It will depreciate more than any other major manufacturers cars

2. You put a 3, 4 or 5 year old Ford/Vauxhall against most other "quality" brands and they are always nastier. Rattles, squeeks, rust, trim fallen off etc. and it's not the owners they just aren't as well put together.

Don't get me wrong, there aren't many bad cars out there these days, but lots of differing levels of average. Billions of dollars of losses, even before the recession answer the question better than I can.

Sorry to be bucking the trend and sticking up for fords here, I cant speak much becuase I dont work in the industry, working on around and in them for 10+ years cant count for much I suppose.

I've said this long before last weeks top gear, ford have been producing cracking cars for over 10 years now for their price band, you can't compare them with

For what its worth I drive my N reg fiesta like I hate it...ok maybe I do but 90,000 miles on the clock and I had no trouble for the 6 years I had it. Ok fords may drop like a stone when they are new but who the hell would buy one brand new? Makes them more attractive to me. My 05 CMAX I have to say is the nicest car I have driven even over my BMW Mini. Only a 1.6 so its not quick but comfy and a real nice place to be. I bought 2 of the transit connects too and thay are the same with big fat handles and buttons for big fat working mans hands!!! lol They have been top notch too.
