Well it's nothing like collecting obelisks...

But I do like my;

Video Games (driving, first person shooter, Real time strategy, flying, rock band...)

General Computer Geekery

3D CAD

Computer Art

RC Helicopters (still suck though)

Taking apart my Lotus :) (more than driving it)

Most of my friends are Aerospace enginerds, Astrophysicists, or DJ's... and I'm Aerospace/Biomedical, so we all accept our geekness.

Hmm, let's see. I guess being a collector is pretty nerdy. I have collected comic books since I was 12 and still enjoy them.I also collect very high detail diecast cars, mostly 1/18 scale. In the last year or so I seem to have started collecting wrist watches. All my collecting seems to have slowed down though since I bought the Lotus as now I need a few things to make her perfect :)

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I'm a Star Wars nerd, so to continue the theme here's a picture of my R2 I'm building, yes it's 1:1! :smoke:

I've just finished working out all the markings and have now printed them off and stuck them to the body ready for cutting and removing of panels. I hope to have it looking like R2 by the end of the summer, then it will be a lot of electrical work making it all work radio controlled.

I personally don't think doing something like this is nerdy, ok it's Star Wars, but once my R2 is all finished I will own a superb piece of engineering and electronic craftmanship completely designed and built by myself, now that can't be nerdy - can it?

Oh, just remembered another nerdy thing, the James Bond car collection is nearly finished and I've bought the lot! Once the collection is complete I'm going to make a big 007 out of mdf to display the cars on, on the wall.

I have a collection of Farts in jam jars going back 23 years. Not sure if that is Nerdy or just plain disturbing.

Below is a pair of my finest ones.

The orange one is from circa 1991 after a particularly good night out. The blue one is a christmas epic from 1995 i think!

I collect vintage electric convector heaters, well ever since Sunday!

Lego? Didn't have any this year, first time for 31 years!!! :smoke:

I collect car parts and don't do anything with them!

I collect cars and don't do anything with them.....!!!! although I seem to have a distinct fascination with watching them decay infront of my eyes and take even more satifaction from doing sweet f**k all about it!

I smell Lisa's farts if she blows off in bed??? WTF is that all about!!

I'm recently into karioke on the xBox with the fart girl (future wife) she's singing along right next to me as we speak. She's got a fab voice!!!

I hoard junk better than the best of the rest! Got boxes and boxes of magazines from donkeys years ago which should be binned but cant seem to bring myself to do it...

Thats about it....!!

Simon

Oh and I watch polly poo, look at my own poo and ask Lisa what her poo looks like. But thats not wierd right?

Oh Owen, I'm afraid you couldn't be more wrong. Whilst you are correct that it takes a lot of effort and craftsmanship to built something like this I'm afraid it could not be any more nerdy if you tried. The fact that it takes such a lot of design, effort and engineering know-how only adds to the nerdyness of the project I'm afraid.

Having said that, if it turns out well and you fancy making a 2nd one let me know :smoke:

I agree with Laura, Owen. Whilst my belief is that you are one of the most talented/creative people I know, building your own Star Wars Robot is very nerdy!

I'm on your side Owen, and very envious of your talents, but I reckon there's a market for R2/D2s, all you need to do is attach a tray and you've got a drinks waiter, now that has to be saleable, nobody who's anybody should be without one.

We used to have a Darlek at the computer shows in Sydney, a few years ago now, but always had some fun with it.

There is already a commercially available life-size R2D2 that is a very cool DVD player and projector, iPod docking station etc. complete with sound effects and a remote control in the form of a Millennium Falcon.

If I had

  • 6 years later...

I saw this in the shops at Xmas and it sort of fell into my basket. 60cms of pure Millennium Falcon.

Took it out of the box and found that it looked rather bland.

So got stuck into it with some old school dry brushing, and its come up really nice.  I've also ordered a full lighting kit which I'll install in a couple of weeks.

Nice work :)

Saw this advertised at Christmas and was tempted until I realised it cost nearly £900 for all the issues!

This one was the equivalent of around 40 pounds. The quality of detail is very high for that amount of money. Plus its big at 600mm. I also bought the supersized xwing which is even bigger than the falcon. That cost around $70 (30 pounds).

Once i've added the lighting to both models, they'll both hang in my cinema room. :-)
