It's sat in the corner doing nothing, and I can't help thinking I'm missing an opportunity while the engine is out.

I was experiencing a slight crunch between 4th and 5th at high rev's, so that needs looking in to.

What would you suggest though......as it's out, I could send it off to be checked over, or am I asking for a big bill for work that's not required?

What would you do in my position?

Hi Daniel,

I was the other Sport 350 at the Nurburgring when you had your misfortune. I am very glad that you are fixing it and not selling. I have the GTO Engineering upgrade fitted to my gearbox and would happily recommend it. It is a fair chunk of change and with your engine work that might not be too attractive at the moment. If you don't want to go down that path then the least you should probably do is split the cases and examine the syncro's for wear or send it to an experienced gearbox shop for an overhaul.

Before I had the GTO upgrade I had the Derek Bell kit fitted. Unfortunately it was manufactured by Jack Knight Developments just before they went bust. They had lost all the good engineers who had earnt their good reputation and did an awful job. Derek Bell was an absolute star with his efforts to rectify the manufacturing balls up which he was not obliged to do but there was just too much wrong. I am only mentioning this to strengthen the need to ensure that you research whoever you send it to and make sure they know their stuff and will stand by their work.

Good luck with all the repairs and I hope we can complete a few laps together at some point. :(

cheers

ey up Chris, it was great to meet you at the ring......I did think it a little odd people flashing and waving at me going in the other direction thinking I was you.

I'll have to take the car to a gearbox specialist to take a look at this 5th gear syncro, but I'm worried that if I ask them to give the rest of it a once over it's like opening my wallet and asking them to take what they like.

6 months ago, money was no issue, but having 3 clients go bump on me, I'm having to justify all costs and an upgrade is un justifiable considering that the gearbox works well and single finger gear changes are easy through all gears.

I'm just wondering if there's anything I SHOULD be doing at this stage.......naturally, even though the clutch is pretty good, I'll be fitting a new one.

Anyway, it would be great to catch up at the ring some time, especially in the 350. I suspect I'll be taking the Exige when I go in April.

Hi Danny,

If you want someone to check it over then I would recommend Alan Voight Gearboxes in Wallasey (near me). They are Lotus gearbox specialists and advertise in the Club Lotus magazine and are on their recommended list of specialists. I know Alan (dad) and Mark (son) reasonably well.

They should be able to give you a quote to strip it and check it out for you.

If you are after an upgrade then follow other people's advise by trying GTO Engineering.

Not had first hand experience but I've heard nothing but good reports from them.

I have the GTO shaft upgrade as well. My only gripes is the whinny sound. I guess someone told me

because of the 2nd gear straight cut gear. Other than that, they are fine and working great.

The kit comes with 2nd and 5th gear. You have to buy your own synchro.

Hi Che,

I am not sure you are quite right with the details. 1st gear is straight cut and whines the most. The kit is supplied with 1st and 2nd gears (along with the new input shaft) which are higher ratios than standard (and much better suited to the Esprit), 2nd gear whines a little and mainly only on deceleration. 5th gear is an option and there are a few ratios to choose from. You can also change the final drive ratio but I believe that would require a new crown and pinion which means a new main shaft I think. John (Toyroom) would know more about this.

John I will respond to your PM when I have a few more free minutes but its no to question 3 sorry. :)

cheers

Hi Daniel,

Actually it not as bad as it seems, you can get at the whole fifth gear mechanism simply by removing the gearbox end cover. You don't even have to pull the gearbox from the car.

From the sounds of it your 5th gear sycnho or baulk ring is worn. I had exactly the same symtoms but even worse - it would always crunch going into 5th regardless of the revs.

But I figured out a simple workaround. When shifting up into fifth, move the level to the neutral right hand plane then pull down as if trying to change to 'sixth'. Then push forward into fifth. Pulling back forces the selector ring away the sycnhro, disengaging it. So when you push forward the syncho can work to prevent the gear crunching.

Althernatively when changing down to 4th, pull down into 'sixth' before moving through neutral to fourth. That has the same effect of disengaging the 5th synchro so when you next change from 4th up to 5th you can do straight to 5th without crunching.

Cheers,

Neal
