Try jacking up the back of the car, turning the heater on and running the engine up with the rad cap off , until the coolant starts to expand and gushes out of the swirl pot. Then replace the cap.

Hey wayne!

My heater is a bit hit and miss too. What does the above process actually do?

I 'assume' the tilt forces any airblock in the heater matrix/system out to the header tank? is that right?

Cheers. :)

Hi keirv

Well were do we start. Firstly can you tell me what year is your S3 Turbo is? Post about 85 versions had a modification to the cooling system (not sure if this does apply to the NA as well). Most cars I believe were sent to dealers to have fitted rather than being fitted at the factory. So it

Hi Keirv

Did your heating problem ever get better?

If not check that your control knob is in the correct position. Over many years the knob set screw can become loose allowing the knob to slip. Under the dash are two vacuum switches. The switch that controls heat/AC is based on the position of a cam. If the knob has slipped then the cam will not be in the correct position. If the knob is slipping then the cam will be in the correct position only part of the time.
