Attempted to get to work today. Took two and half hours on the train from Oxfordshire to London and then found out work's closed due to "adverse weather conditions."

And 2 inches of snow and London's comes to a standstill, no tubes or buses running.

Still, mustn't grumble, got a day of work :).

This isn't snowing! Showing my age now, but when I was a lad it snowed properly, 6 ft drifts, roads totally blocked with walls of snow. today we only have to have a 1cm and the country grinds to a halt! Wrapped up in cotton wool society today!

Most places I've ever worked have been in the sticks, I've always manged or tried to get to work, snow just makes it a bit more of an adventure. One place I worked I got into work having ploughed through 8 miles of snow, the boss then phoned everyone from the same town asking why they weren't in as I and a few others had manged it! We were popular! :)

I heard on the radio this morning all the schools that were shutting, I can remember the schools staying open regardless, if there were a few kids they were rounded up and spent the day in one classroom. I bet even the private schools in Norwich are shut, and they are the kids that arrive in the rich parents 4x4's!

I was out snowballing with the kids at 7 this morning. Very rare to get this amount of snow around here. There school is about the only one open in our area, but pulling them to school on a sledge got the thumbs up, even more so than when I have taken them in the Esprit. Think I'll leave work early today and make the most of it.

I recall visiting BASEEFA...that's the British Approval Service for Electrical Equipment in Flammable Atmospheres..up in the hills near Buxton. Was designing a microfiche reader for paintshops. More than a bit out in the wilds..They told us that the weather sometimes got so bad they couldn't get in to work. The instant reply couldn't be repressed.."Has it ever got so bad you couldn't get HOME?!!" Went down like a lead balloon. They charged

To be fair they are reporting this as the heaviest snow fall for around 20 years so it isn't just the old "1 inch of snow and the country comes to a standstill" complaint. It's been snowing for about 18+ hours where we live at looking at the back garden there's almost a foot of snow covering everything, enough that it's a struggle to get the door open now due to the snow! We're luck that we work from home and don't have to worry about getting to work but having watched many cars slip, slide and crash down the street I don't I'd fancy driving anywhere today!

LOL watching the news - its really bordering on pathetic. The ms drove from my house in maidstone to croydon last night and it took her 5 hrs what usually take 45mins tops !!! and it really wasn't that bad, perhaps 2cm but because it wasn't gritted no-one could get up the hills. So sad....

Cliff your pictures are just gorgeous!

I just about made it into work today, but rear wheel drive sucks, I was all over the place, not a single road I took had been gritted.

I am now effectively snowed in. Got back tonight and did the usual three point turn on the drive, but she flatly refuses to go up the drive (it's quite a slope) so I cannot even line up to get her in the garage. There's no way I will get her off the drive tomorrow with even more snow, I'd burn the clutch out trying to I suspect.

Just because you can, does'nt mean you should.

I was in Central London last night/this morning and it was certainly more than an inch that fell. Looking out onto a wall outside the hotel it was about 6 inches deep.

No buses, no underground and no taxis (although managed to flag down the one that was working). Lots of trains cancelled, but luckily the Liverpool service out of Euston was still running at 11.07am

Was strange to see London with virtually no traffic

Normally it's a 20-minute drive home. Tonight: three and a quarter hours.

Snow in Sheffield along with sub-zero temperatures. Struggled across the Abbeydale Road South/Abbey Lane junction - and that's virtually level!

Wide tyres in snow coupled with ice don't mix too well.

Made it though . . . now for tomorrow . . .

Just drove home from Milton Keynes to South Somerset from 3 til 7 today - usually takes me not much more than half that time. There was proper snow all over the roads most of the way and it was really difficult through Wiltshire on the A303. Really made use of the Hill Decent feature on the Rangie. One hill had defeated a Calor Gas tanker going up and the big Portuguese 18 wheeler trying to get down. The queues either side were slithering all over the place, but the Rangie ploughed on through without undue drama. I could really feel ABS traction control stuff doing its thing, especially all the downhill wizardry - Stunning!! Sobering tho...apart from lorries/cars just plain stuck on slopes, there was a Smart in a ditch looking a bit worse for wear and quite a bit of police car activity on blues and twos.
