My car is a Federal spec. that was supplied new to Canada in 1983

It was fitted with a Blaupunkt CR-3001H autoreverse stereo radio -cassette.

It also had a Blaupunkt 4 channel power amp BPA-415-A

Im pretty sure they were factory installed, but they also could have been installed at the suppling dealer.

Interested to see what others come up with!

Hi there

Well according to my old Lotus parts manual there were 9 on offer:

National Panasonic 973 (A082M6166F)

National Panasonic 583 (A084M6035F)

Motorola "Lotus" (A089M6027F)

Sparkomatic Sr309F (A089M6051F)

Blaupunkt Cambridge (A089M6328F)

Blaupunkt Boston (A089M6329F)

Blaupunkt Toronto (A082M6266F)

Clarion 950 (A089M6082F)

Clarion 920 (A089M6119F)

However I think most of these if not all are extinct by now. Though I have seen at shows people who specialise in old car radios ect. might be worth looking out for.

I don't think I

I am going to make lots of people jealous now (including myself)

Richard Cambers has recently acquired a NEW - old stock, unfitted, ROOF RADIO!!!!!! As fitted to the Essex! (That was a National Panasonic one btw)

Next time I see him online I'll ask what his old one was and what he intends to do with it?

I think the Blaupunkt deck was also common to the BMW 3 Series of the era - I used to have a 325i and replaced the Blaupunkt with a CD player. Probably also common on VWs.

I kept the deck for some reason, plan to put it into the Esprit someday.

Hi Nick

According to Lotus and the original factory records, my '84 was fitted with the Motorola "Lotus" (A089M6027F)... Looks like this was the one fitted to domestic spec Esprits. This was replaced ages ago by a PO for a rather nasty JVC item. "Might" be able to source the original... but don't hold you breath... I'm upgrading mine to an Alpine unit. They just look 'right' for the car (especially the green backlight :D )

I like the way my Nakamichi looks, even though the CD player doesn't work.

can you a ford that?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

My parents went through a succession of owning the worst Ford products made since the 70s, excluding the Pinto. Including: 76 Thunderbird (with vinyl top... maroon of course) 80 Granada (rebodied Maverick, not like a European Granada) 85 Tempo (bought as a birthday present for me... though technically given to my mom, poor girl) And finally my dad bought her a 90 Probe (I think I've gone on the "who the f*ck would call a car a probe" diatribe before. Anyways yeah, my dad probed my mom.

Anyways. Back to the topic, I've got a hookup for one of these as my radio.

at least ipods actually work. knowing Teigan, you've probably already fashioned a carbon fiber shroud for it, disguising its identity.

the buttons on the zentouch barely work half the time, or don't do what they're supposed to (the ok button sometimes automatically puts it in random mode). it crashes constantly. The battery DOESN'T last 24 hours.

I've heard good things about iriver's products though. too bad it's too late (I got it as a gift anyways. Can't really complain)

Have nothing but nice things to say about the iPod :D

My iPod gets carried from home to work in any car I happen to feel like driving, gets used all day, back in the car and used at home. Everyday.

Got a 60Gb iPhoto which has more than enough storage capacity for my vast collection of tunes etc... (How I miss Kazaa). Know its a trendy item, but hey, I'm a Mac user for years and will remain brand loyal...

With the plug-on FM tuner/charger, I can get rid of the shuttle in my Esprit, ditch the cheapo JVC and wire in an old early 90's Alpine I've got lying around, find a quiet frequency and off I go. The Alpine looks period enough, I.e. Black with no fancy displays and other annoying distractions -

I would highly recommend keeping the head unit stock, or period and getting an iPod which is completely unobtrusive, no fiddling with wiring etc... That way you don't have an arcade game flashing in your centre consol and the interior of the car just looks right.

i try to support innovation with my dollars, but apple has abandoned me too many times. amongst other things, i own an appleLisa and a newton120, both of which apple stopped making software and replacement parts for, not long after the warranty ran out.

i would never listen to music i like over FM. to broadcast via radio carrier, the audio dynamics must be compressed like crazy. all the very quiet and very loud audio content of your music is changed to medium volume, and the performance goes flat. i could play you two versions of your favourite song, and you'd know which one was FMed.

death to iPOD. death to apple. have a nice day.

A disgruntled Mac user - Oh Dear :)

Sure the sound quality will be compromised using an FM modulator. A few of my vehicles have some serious sound in them which I use for SQL competitions. Play the iPod through these systems and it does sound crap. For everyday use, I think the performance is fine, but for a true audiophile, like ourselves it seems?, it will not deliver a stellar performance.

The main suggestion I was trying to make was that...

"I would highly recommend keeping the head unit stock, or period and getting an iPod (for added functionality) which is completely unobtrusive, no fiddling with wiring etc... and the interior of the car just looks right. "

Reason? I saw an early 60's Corvette a while back. Beautiful job, inside and out, and stuck in the dash was a Kenwood mp3 deck. Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!!!

Easy on the Macs Teigan - Rather give them the cash than Uncle Bill :D

Personally, I find the sound quality of music (ipod or otherwise) to be totally compromised in the car by the fact that there is a screetchy engine living next door. In the car, I listen to the engine. Music I listen to at home. Imho they don't mix.

what about replacing the carStereo with a standard din slot, active noise cancelling amplifier with audio input jack, and minimal controls/display? if i built one, what is a fair pricetag?

RANT = ON!

I think most people buy iPods first as they are the product of the hour and are mistaking its features as being in some way unique - most of what they extol would apply to any MP3 player (sorry about your dodgy Zen but that's not typical of ALL other MP3 Players!)

It comes down to this... Apple - Overpriced, Underspecified, Overhyped and Overtrendy :o

..and that applies to ANY Apple product ever (since and not including the classic)

If ever I meet Steve Jobs I'm going to punch him in the throat the b**tard

They went through a phase of buying up key applications (eg. emagic Logic Audio, Lightwave etc etc) - In fact the entire companies (!) Of what they considered to be their core market - ie graphics / audio apps. and then immediately discontinued the PC versions.

If Microsoft had done the converse they would have been in court faster than you can say Jack Robinson

I second Teigan (and now I'm concerned! :o ).....

Death to Steve tosser Jobs, Death to Apple :o

Rant = Off!
