Check Engine Light?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Whilst having a fun day out in the Esprit today, I opened up the throttle on 2nd and 3rd (big smile) at which point the "check engine light" came on and is staying on.

The car is still dirving fine and performance is awesome.

I obviously need to check the codes but am clueless on how I do this myself and what codes relate to what topic?

Please can someone help, point me in the direction of software and/or cable I need to purchase (Assuming this connects to a laptop??).

Thanks very much!!!!

Bucks.

Sorted, bought the Gendan cable and software....

Thanks for the PM pat!

Cheers!!!

so whats the code???, in order you get full throttle on our run (and as you say it performs powerful i guess wastegate stuck closed and you get some overboost ?..) Or was it something more complicated !?

even without the handheld tool we can guess whats it: you say power is no problem (so its not set 'limp home' with half power...), the codes stays on -so it some sort of emission related stuff or something similar that makes sense.

I can use the boring long night and read in the workshop papers..

PS.

Ohh...i see that my local TV shows 'Ray' the Ray Carles biography with Jamie Foxx -so your problem is not my first priority now :P

I get this too from time to time. Wide open throttle the engine light comes on. No power issues, car drives like normal. After 2 or 3 cold starts the light goes off. Bought a code reader, but as of yet, have never got it to pair with the car. Very frustrating.

P.S. Does anyone have the service manual/parts manual on computer for this car? I seem to have misplaced the CD at the moment during my move and am about to take the transmission/clutch out. Thanks!

i know it's some strange type of style , bud as an single i like to read such stuff on night -so yes, i have it both ways printed and binary [it's 65MB Steve, I'm on analog dial up -so i can't send it...].

By the way: some fall out, as those codes are only available on US cars, and some have an limited value of calculation parameters, so there is some power loss. Interesting to see what's it in the end :P

You need to find out the code but Iam sticking my neck out and guesing it's an overboosting code.

If you do find this, and you check your usual stuff, I don't think this will be a problem.

Come on Kylie & Dave. You can't sit on the fence with these predictions. We need the corresponding error code, not just a wild stab in the dark :P

I'd guess at it being a lean condition caused by either too much boost or a malfunctioning O2 sensor (err codes P0172 or P0174). Can't quite make my mind up if its the left or right bank though.

Regards,

Peter.

my tought is still 'emission' relatet or overboost (thats around 8 possible codes..)

Reason for edit: this is LEF not LEW

I think it's the light bulb behind the "check engine" telltale coming on.

Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose.

When the weather is shit the stock wastegates easily stick. Most likely cause of a v8 CEL ime.

If the car feels super-quick its probably overboosting due to the stuck 'gate which is fun, but not actually a good thing. WD40 and some wiggling can help, or replace with better quality item..

Cheers Rob...

Am still waiting for the OBDII reader in the post....

However, light did not come on during the start-up this morning  but I still need to know what it is....

FYI, the previous owner had x2 billet alloy wastegate upgrades done from PNM.

Cheers

No no...it was more a joke, as no one of us really know what you have done or not as it happens... .

Connect it to the diagnostic port and we will see whats it - good luck :)
